I bought this to use on my Umbrella Cockatoo, Austin. We usually use a heavy-duty emery board. Austin like the attentiona and lifts his little talon up when we pick up the emery board.

You have to be careful when approaching ANY animal with this instrument. The website gives instructions about approaching your pet. You have to get it used to seeing it, getting it close, touching it, etc., giving positive feedback and/or treats all the while. It is not until AFTER your pet is used to the instruction that it should even be turned on. We used this approach with Austin, and we were able to use it just fine. And if you think a dog is skiddish, you should see a bird in a full-scale panic!!

It is all in the approach. We used this same approach with a blow drier, new playtops and stands, too. It works every time. But you have to take is slow and be patient.

I have a 30lb beagle/pug mix that has the longest quick in a dog's nail I've ever encountered; especially for his size! I would take him to the vet or groomer and they could only cut a little on just a few nails.
I was hesitant to buy a dremmel since they're loud and pricey, so this was the novice alternative.
I find it's so much better to just take the cap off, otherwise it's ineffective, takes long, and hard to maneuver.
I agree that's it's best for weekly maintenance or to smooth after a nail trim.
My trick is yummy small treats to give him after i do each paw. he actually will sit still, where i can't even brush his teeth without him squirming.
I read that eventually the quick should receede bit by bit to a smaller nail, but that hasn't happened just yet.
Even though it's more time consuming, I feel more comfortable since i can grind close to the quick without hurting him.
I think plug- in version would work so much better, the grinding power seems weak and it eats batteries.
I was advised to walk him more on the pavement since this will wear the nails down naturally and we're both getting excercise!

Comments about Pedi Paws Pet Nail Trimmer, 1 ea:

This file just takes so long to do almost nothing that the dog loses patience, but that is if you can get them to sit through the noisy filing that sounds like the nail is being ripped off. It does not seem to hurt the dog. It is just very unpleasantly noisy and such a long process.

If you have a dog that is nervous about other things it will probably not work. I have a lab who lays there from the first time i used it and a Brussels Griffon that runs for the hills if i turn it on. But my lab is an easy going animal and my brussels is wired and energetic. As far a the performance. It is made well, very sturdy, works a filing the nails down quickly and easy to use.

I take off the guard and use it without. My Keeshound isn't scaried of it at all. He lays still while I use it. He loves it, he likes to smell it after. And it is faster too...

Comments about Pedi Paws Pet Nail Trimmer, 1 ea:

I bought this for my dog (a Jack Russell Terrier) who keeps his nails short in the Summer by digging in the yard but come Winter, they grow to horrible lengths. I thought this would be easy to use and it made sense to me. I turned it on and my dog ran away. I hunted him down and held him in my lap and brought the electronic file to his nail, as soon as it touched the nail, he jerked his paw back and jumped off my lap and ran away again. I tried this on my Dad's dog (a Cairn Terrier) and she did the same thing. I tried it on my sister's dog (a Chihuahua) and the same thing happened. I gave it to my other sister who has three dogs (a Border Collie, a Beagle and a Dachshund) and she said the same thing happened with her and them. I don't recommend this to anyone. Maybe if you got it for free to try, it wouldn't be so bad but I wouldn't waste my money. We ended up just throwing it away which seemed like a huge waste.

I don't quite understand the negative reviews. I found this incredibly easy to use and very effective with moth my 9 month Aussie and my 7 year cat. Neither of them like it, but it's perfectly doable with the help of my husband to hold them and far easier then using clippers. For the cat, my husband holds his scruff so he relaxes while I trim the nails (which grow very long, very quickly). My puppy has a long quick making it particularly difficult to use clippers so this is perfect for rounding out her sharp nails. I HIGHLY recommend this if, like me, you are nervous about cutting into your pet's quick with clippers.

Packaging shows golden retriever. I have a small lab and after almost 40 minutes it didn't make a dent in even one nail. There is no way this product will work on anything other than maybe a cat or tiny dog and even that's questionable.

My service dog is a cocker spaniel that I keep in coat year round. He has black nails so cutting them often results in injury.

I groom him myself, but had a local grooming shop grind his nails down periodically using a rotary grinder, so I bought a Dremel rotary tool. I found the Dremel more difficult to use than appeared when watching the groomer: even at lowest speed, it would catch fur (remember this is a cocker spaniel in coat with furry paws) and result in injury. He quickly developed a fear of the rotary tool.

The Pedi Paws trimmer has a much slower motor and shuts off with excessive pressure. The guard keeps it from grabbing fur. My dog no longer fears having his nails trimmed. Even though it takes a while to grind down longer nails, it's great for weekly maintenance. I HIGHLY recommend it.
