Benefits of Exfoliation

Your skin sheds around a million cells every day as part of its natural renewal process. However, the exfoliation process can become sluggish as skin ages or if you are feeling under the weather. You can slough off the dead skin cells that cling to the surface of the epidermis by using a loofah, body brush or sponge as part of your personal care regimen.

Sponges and Loofahs

Sea sponges are a type of water-based animal. They thrive in clear, quiet waters. Sea sponges can be harvested in a way that allows them to grow back over five to seven years. This makes them an eco-friendly bath accessory. The rough surface of natural sea sponges helps to exfoliate the skin, leaving it refreshed and revitalized.

Alternatively, you may choose to use a sponge manufactured using fine plastic netting or other man-made materials. Some synthetic sponges contain anti-bacterial agents to prevent germs breeding while the sponge is drying.

Natural loofahs are made from fibrous plants. Because the surface of the loofah is rough and uneven, it can exfoliate the skin by removing stubborn dead cells.

Body Brushes

Health and well being practitioners recommend using a body brush on dry skin every morning. Dry body brushing can help stimulate the circulation while loosening dead skin cells. It can also help improve lymphatic drainage, which enhances the body's ability to process toxins and unwanted waste products. The brush should be worked up the body, from the ankles toward the heart, using gentle circular strokes.

Body brushes can also be used while showering or bathing to apply soaps and bodywash. You can work up a rich lather by wetting the head of the brush, applying your favorite body cleanser, and gently scrubbing hard-to-reach areas, such as your back.

The bristles of body brushes can be made from a variety of natural sources, including fibers from agave and bamboo plants or boar bristles. Body brushes may also have synthetic bristles made from man-made materials such as nylon.

Microfiber Cloths and Towels

Advances in technology have enabled manufacturers to produce cloths and towels using microfibers. These cloths and towels are finer and lighter than traditional cloths and towels. However, they have greater absorbency.

Hair towels and turbans made from microfibers absorb water from the hair extremely effectively. This helps minimize drying time. Removing as much water as possible from the hair using a microfiber towel can help reduce the damage that can be caused by high temperatures during blow drying.

Fabrics made from microfibers dry very quickly, helping them remain germ-free between uses.
