| Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) is a flowering shrub that belongs to the black pepper family. Also known as kava, it can increase the effects of alcohol and certain drugs, including barbiturates (such as phenobarbital and secobarbital) and benzodiazepines (such as Xanax and Valium).
