 | Are there any nonprescription treatments for leg cramps?
|
| Leg cramps are sudden, painful muscle spasms of the calf muscle in the leg. They bother most adults at some time in their lives, and can be completely harmless or caused by certain medical conditions. Currently there are no nonprescription drugs for treatment of leg cramps. Quinine sulfate used to be sold over the counter for this purpose, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned nonprescription quinine in March 1998 because its effectiveness in treating leg cramps has not been proven. (Quinine sulfate is still available by prescription for the treatment of malaria.) American Pharmaceutical Association, 1996.
