With Seldane and Hismanal off the market, what can I use to treat my allergies?

answer for 'With Seldane and Hismanal off the market, what can I use to treat my allergies?'Seldane (generic name terfenadine) and Hismanal (astemizole) — two prescription antihistamines — are no longer sold in the United States. These drugs were discontinued, in part, because of potential serious interactions with other medicines. Fortunately, other prescription antihistamines similar to Seldane and Hismanal are available and these drugs present a much lower risk for interactions. They are Allegra (fexofenadine), Claritin (loratadine), and Zyrtec (cetirizine). For most people, all three drugs work equally well to treat allergy symptoms, and all have few side effects. However, some people find that they respond better to one over another.

While these medicines are considered to cause less drowsiness than many antihistamines commonly used in the past, some people may still experience drowsiness when taking them.

If a stuffy nose is part of your allergy symptoms, Allegra and Claritin are also available in combination with a decongestant. These combination drugs are called Allegra-D and Claritin-D.
