What is Celexa?

What is Celexa?

answer for 'What is Celexa?'Celexa (generic name citalopram) is a prescription medication used to relieve the symptoms of depression. It belongs to a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. SSRIs increase the amount of the chemical serotonin in the brain. Other medicines in this class include fluoxetine (brand name >Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (>Zoloft), escitalopram (Lexapro), and fluvoxamine (>Luvox).

Celexa works well in reducing symptoms of depression. It is also used to treat anxiety and eating disorders. Celexa generally begins to work within the first two weeks of treatment, but it can take four to six weeks to see the full effect.

The recommended dose for the treatment of depression ranges from 20 to 60mg a day although doses over 40mg a day are not usually recommended. Celexa is taken once a day, with or without food.
