 | Are there any interactions with Enbrel?
|
| Enbrel (generic name etanercept) is an injectable drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, which is a chronic, inflammatory disease that causes painful swelling, redness, and stiffness of the joints. Enbrel changes the immune response and helps relieve swelling, pain, and stiffness in the joints. Although specific drug interation studies of Enbrel have not been conductred, several studies of other medications have indicated possible interactions. Enbrel users in clincal studies of sulfasalazine and anakinra developed a mild decrease in white blood counts. Similarly, several rheumatoid arthritis patients in the anakinra study developed serious infections. Enbrel may prevent the body from responding to certain types of vaccines, such as oral polio, varicella, oral typhoid, and yellow fever. Don’t get these vaccines when you’re taking Enbrel. The drug does not interfere with the effects of the vaccines if you received them months or years before beginning treatment. Enbrel may also interfere with some lab tests, so make sure your health care provider knows you are taking Enbrel if you have any lab work done.
