 | Are there any prescription treatments for hemorrhoids?
|
| Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins in swollen tissues of the rectum, just inside or outside the anus. Over-the-counter products are the primary treatments for hemorrhoids. But doctors recommend prescription drugs when hemorrhoids don't improve with other treatments. Prescription creams and suppositories containing hydrocortisone can relieve the swelling and itching of hemorrhoids. These products include Anusol-HC and >Proctocort. Prescription products have a higher strength of hydrocortisone compared to over-the-counter products. If problems persist, treatments such as injections, laser treatments, or surgery give long-term relief. Sources: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. McGraw-Hill Companies, 1998.
