What is Ultram?

Ultram (generic name tramadol) is a prescription medicine that relieves moderate to severe pain. It acts in the brain to block pain signals and promote a feeling of well-being. Ultram's action is similar to narcotic pain relievers, but it isn't a narcotic. It relieves many different types of pain. Ultram works as well as Tylenol #3 (acetaminophen and codeine) for people with chronic low back, cancer, or joint pain.

The usual dose of Ultram is 50 to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours but no more than 400 mg in 24 hours. You may have to take less depending on your age, whether you have any liver or kidney problems, and the other medications you take. You can take Ultram with or without food.
