What is Aricept?

What is Aricept?

answer for 'What is Aricept?'Aricept (generic name donepezil) helps improve memory in people with Alzheimer's disease. It belongs to a group of medicines called cholinesterase inhibitors.

Cholinesterase is an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a chemical in the brain involved with memory. By blocking cholinesterase, Aricept boosts the brain’s supply of acetylcholine so that memory improves. In clinical studies, Aricept improved brain functions such as memory and reasoning in up to 60 percent of patients with Alzheimer's. Response to Aricept varies considerably from person to person, and the drug usually works best for people with mild or moderate symptoms.

You can take Aricept with or without food. It generally takes four to six weeks to have a noticeable effect. Although Aricept can help improve the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, it isn't a cure.
