 | What is Gleevec?
|
| Gleevec (generic name imatinib) is an anti-cancer drug approved by the FDA to treat patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). CML is an abnormal growth of white blood cells. CML is usually associated with a unique chromosome abnormality called the Philadelphia chromosome. Gleevec is the first anti-cancer drug that is designed to specifically target cancer cells. Older cancer medications kill both cancer and healthy cells, leading to a higher risk of side effects. Gleevec works by blocking a protein that stimulates the growth of abnormal white blood cells. Gleevec should be taken with food and a large glass of water. The maker of Gleevec, Novartis, has set up a patient product information line for patients who need further assistance and information about Gleevec.
