Are there any drug interactions with Interferon?

Are there any drug interactions with Interferon?

answer for 'Are there any drug interactions with Interferon?'Interferons are a family of proteins produced either naturally by the immune system or synthetically. Interferons fight viral infections and affect the ability of the virus to multiply in certain cells including liver cells. These drugs may be used to treat certain types of cancers, genital warts, a type of respiratory growth, and hepatitis C and B. Examples of interferons include: interferon alfa-2a (brand name Roferon-A), interferon alfa-2b (Intron-A), and interferon alfacon-1 (Infergen). Another type of interferon is pegylated interferon which bonds interferon with polyethylene glycol (a gelatinous compound used to thicken food). Examples of pegylated interferon include peginterferon alfa-2a (Pegasys), and peginterferon alfa-2b (Peg-Intron).

Interferons may interact with different types of vaccines. Be sure to talk with your doctor or pharmacist before receiving vaccines while you are taking interferon. There may also be drug interactions that occur with the following medications: theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theo 24), zidovudine (Retrovir), lamivudine (Epivir), colchicine, enalapril (Vasotec), and captopril (Capoten). Alcohol use should be avoided or minimized during treatment periods as well.

This list is not all-inclusive so be sure to discuss any other prescription, over-the-counter, or alternative medications you are currently taking with your doctor or pharmacist.
