What are controlled substances?
Controlled substances (also called scheduled drugs) are medicines that are particularly prone to abuse and can cause physical or psychological dependence. Controlled substances with legitimate medical uses are divided into four categories: Schedules II-V.

Schedule II drugs
drugstore.com dispenses Schedule II drugs, but you must follow special ordering procedures. Schedule II drugs include:

Special ordering procedures for Schedule II drugs
Federal and state laws regulate the distribution of all prescription medicines. The regulations are more stringent for Schedule II drugs.
What does this mean for you?
  • We must receive the original hard-copy of your prescription by mail. Faxes, phone or transfer requests for Schedule II medications will not be accepted.
  • We must receive the prescription within 30 days from the date on which it was written.
  • It may take an extra business day to complete your order because of our verification process.
  • New Jersey law limits drugstore.com to dispensing a maximum quantity of a 30-day supply or 120 dosage units, whichever is less. Prescriptions must be written for no greater than a 30 - day supply or 120 dosage units, whichever is less.
  • All prescription orders for Schedule II drugs will require an adult signature on delivery.
Schedule III-V drugs
drugstore.com dispenses Schedule III-V drugs, but you must follow special ordering procedures. Schedule III-V drugs include:

  • You can only transfer a prescription for a Schedule III-V drug one time. If you transfer a prescription to or from drugstore.com, you cannot transfer it again.
  • We must receive the prescription within 30 days from the date on which it was written.
  • If your pharmacy is in New York state, you cannot transfer a prescription for a Schedule III-V drug at all.
  • We cannot accept a faxed prescription for a Schedule III-V drug. You can mail in your prescription or ask your doctor to call your prescription in to our pharmacy at (800) 373-2133.
  • All prescription orders for Schedule III-V drugs will require a signature on delivery.
