Chemical Name: TRIAZOLAM (trye-AY-zoe-lam)
This medicine is a benzodiazepine used to treat sleep disorders. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking delavirdine, efavirenz, HIV protease inhibitors, azole antifungals (such as ketoconazole or itraconazole), or nefazodone. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking amiodarone, antihistamines, calcium channel blockers (such as diltiazem or verapamil), cimetidine, clozapine, cyclosporine, ergot alkaloids (such as ergotamine), hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills), isoniazid, ketolides (such as telithromycin), macrolides (such as erythromycin), medicines for seizures (such as carbamazepine or phenytoin), methadone, omeprazole, ranitidine, rifampin, (SSRIs) (such as fluvoxamine, paroxetine, or sertraline), sodium oxybate, or St John's. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including mental or mood problems (such as depression), alcohol use, a history of drug or alcohol abuse or addiction, lung or breathing problems (such as chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)), emphysema, difficulty breathing while asleep (sleep apnea), liver or kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine has a MEDICATION GUIDE approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. AVOID DRINKING GRAPEFRUIT JUICE while taking this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degress F (20 and 25 degress C) away from heat, moisture, and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If you no longer have time for a full night's sleep or you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR if this medicine stops working well. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking this medicine for longer than prescribed may be habit-forming. If your symptoms do not improve within 7 to 10 days or if they become worse, check with your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. THIS MEDICINE WILL ADD TO THE EFFECTS of other medicines and alcohol. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines can cause drowsiness or dizziness. SOME PATIENTS TAKING THIS MEDICINE HAVE PERFORMED CERTAIN ACTIVITIES WHILE THEY WERE NOT FULLY AWAKE. These have included sleep driving, making and eating food, making phone calls, and having sex. Patients often do not remember these events after they happen. Such an event may be more likely to occur if you use a high dose of this medicine. It may also be more likely if you drink alcohol or take other medicines that may cause drowsiness while you use this medicine. Tell your doctor right away if such an event happens to you. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant. IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT, contact your doctor immediately. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include clumsiness, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, lightheadedness, nervousness, stomach upset, unsteadiness, or weakness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience new or increased anxiety during the day or memory loss. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience bizarre behavior; changes in personality, mood, or behavior; chest pain; confusion; depression; disorientation; fainting; falling or staggering; hallucinations; irregular heartbeat; loss of coordination; severe drowsiness; slurred speech; suicidal thoughts; unusual tiredness or weakness; or yellowing of the eyes or skin. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, severe dizziness; swelling of hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; unusual hoarseness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, slow reflexes, clumsiness, deep sleep, and loss of consciousness.
You may experience trouble sleeping for 1 to 2 nights after you stop taking this medicine. If it continues, contact your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children.
