Chemical Name: SODIUM POLYSTYRENE SULFONATE (SOE-dee-um pol-ee-STYE-reen)
This medicine is used to treat high levels of potassium in the body.
INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor and pharmacist of any other medical conditions or allergies.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine should be mixed with one fourth of a glass of water. SHAKE WELL before taking a dose. DRINKING EXTRA FLUIDS while you are taking this medicine is recommended. Check with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist for instructions. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once.
FOLLOW THE DIETARY PLAN provided by your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE or other potassium supplement without checking with your doctor. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any medicines that contain magnesium hydroxide or calcium carbonate. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include loss of appetite, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, or constipation. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience swelling of feet or hands; change in heartbeat; unexplained muscle weakness; muscle cramps; or change in emotions, mood, or behavior. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur.
