Chemical Name: BECAPLERMIN (be-KAP-ler-min)
This medicine is a wound healing agent used along with strict wound care to promote the healing of skin ulcers of the lower legs or feet that can occur as a complication of diabetes.
WARNING: According to one study, patients treated with 3 or more tubes of this medicine had an increased risk of death from cancer. Tell your doctor if you have a history of cancer. Be sure the benefits of using this medicine are greater than the risks. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of cancer, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDE if you have a cancerous growth or tumor at the site where this medicine is to be applied. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may come with a patient information leaflet. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions you may have about this medicine. Wash your hands immediately before and after using this medicine. Using a clean applicator (cotton tipped swab or tongue depressor), spread the gel in a thin layer evenly over the affected area. Cover with a moist dressing. Change the dressing as directed by your doctor. Before applying more medicine, rinse the affected area to remove any remaining medicine. Be careful not to touch the tip of the medicine tube to the skin or any other surface. Replace cap after each use. Store this medicine in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT use 2 doses at once.
DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use this medicine more often than prescribed without checking with your doctor. IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS for this medicine to work. Do not stop using this medicine without checking with your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
NO COMMON SIDE EFFECTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED with the proper use of this medicine. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience a red skin rash in the treated area. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
