Chemical Name: COLLAGENASE (COL-la-ge-naz)
This medicine is an enzymatic debriding ointment used to remove dead skin from wounds and burned areas to aid skin healing.
INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Wash your hands immediately before and after using this medicine. Before you apply this medicine, clean the wound as directed by your doctor. IF YOU ARE USING AN ANTIBIOTIC POWDER, apply it before using this medicine. FOR SHALLOW WOUNDS, apply this medicine to a sterile gauze pad. Then apply the gauze pad to the wound and secure in place. FOR DEEP WOUNDS, apply this medicine directly to the wound using a wooden tongue depressor or spatula. DO NOT APPLY this medicine to healthy skin. Cover the affected area with a sterile dressing, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. REMOVE ALL EXCESS OINTMENT each time you change the dressing. STORE THIS MEDICINE in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light.
IF YOUR SYMPTOMS DO NOT IMPROVE WITHIN 2 weeks or if they become worse, check with your doctor. AVOID GETTING THIS MEDICINE IN YOUR EYES or on the inside of your nose or mouth. CERTAIN SKIN CLEANSERS AND SOAKING SOLUTIONS MAY INTERFERE WITH THE EFFECTS OF THIS MEDICINE. Check with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist before using skin cleansers or soaking solutions. You may use hydrogen peroxide or normal saline, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or skin rash. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
