Chemical Name: BENAZEPRIL (ben-AZ-e-pril) and HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (HYE-droe-KLOR-oh-THYE-a-zide)
This medicine is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and thiazide diuretic combination used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
WARNING: This medicine may cause injury or death to the fetus if taken after the third month of pregnancy. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking dofetilide or ketanserin. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking digoxin, diazoxide, diuretics, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) (eg, losartan), aldosterone blockers (eg, eplerenone), potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone, triamterene), potassium supplements, trimethoprim, certain gold-containing medicines (eg, sodium aurothiomalate), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, indomethacin), lithium, sulfonylureas (eg, glyburide), or thiopurines (eg, azathiopurine). Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of heart problems (eg, heart failure, aortic stenosis), blood vessel problems, blood flow problems, bone marrow problems, kidney or liver problems, diabetes, gout, stroke, recent heart attack, kidney transplant, asthma, autoimmune disease (eg, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma), low blood volume, low blood pressure, high blood potassium levels, low blood sodium levels, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are dehydrated, receiving treatments to reduce sensitivity to bee or wasp stings, you are having dialysis or apheresis, scheduled to have major surgery or receive anesthesia, or if you are taking another medicine for high blood pressure. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or unusual hoarseness), kidney artery narrowing, or if you are unable to urinate. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you are pregnant. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. TAKE THIS MEDICINE with or without food. IF YOU TAKE cholestyramine or colestipol, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you remember to take it. Continue to take this medicine even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine, any other sulfonamide medicine (eg, sulfamethoxazole, glyburide, probenecid), or other ACE inhibitors (eg, lisinopril). Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using/taking this medicine. This medicine may interfere with certain lab tests, including parathyroid function tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use this medicine with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE OR A PRODUCT THAT HAS POTASSIUM IN IT without checking with your doctor. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS while taking this medicine and avoid engaging in activities that cause excessive sweating. Dehydration, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea may lead to a fall in blood pressure. Contact your health care provider at once if any of these occur. A persistent, unproductive cough may occur. Tell your doctor if this occurs. Recovery is rapid when the medicine is stopped. Patients who take medicine for high blood pressure often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after starting treatment. Be sure to take your medicine even if you may not feel "normal." Tell your doctor if you develop any new symptoms. This medicine may not work as well in black patients. They may also be at greater risk of side effects. Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Use this medicine with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects. FOR WOMEN: This medicine may cause fetal and newborn death if you take it while you are pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. This medicine is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine. DIABETES PATIENTS: This medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include cough, diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness when sitting up or standing, fatigue, headache, nausea, or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience blurred vision or other vision changes; chest pain; dark urine; decreased sexual ability; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; increase in thirst, hunger, or urination; muscle cramps, weakness; or stiffness; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; severe or persistent cough; severe dizziness or lightheadedness; shortness of breath; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual stomach pain; unusual weakness or fatigue; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty swallowing or breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness.
