Chemical Name: ALISKIREN (a-lis-KYE-ren) and HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (HYE-droe-KLOR-oh-THYE-a-zide)

Common uses
This medicine is a direct renin inhibitor and thiazide combination used to treat high blood pressure in certain patients.

Before using
WARNING: This medicine may cause injury and even death to the developing fetus if you take it while you are pregnant. Contact your doctor at once if you think you may be pregnant. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking cyclosporine, dofetilide, or ketanserin. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticoagulants (such as warfarin), azole antifungals (such as ketoconazole), ACE inhibitors (such as lisinopril), barbiturates (such as phenobarbital), certain HMG CO-A inhibitors (such as atorvastatin), cholestyramine, colestipol, corticotropin, corticosteroids (such as prednisone), diazoxide, digoxin, diuretics (such as furosemide), insulin or other medicines for diabetes, irbesartan, lithium, medicines for heart problems, other medicines for high blood pressure, narcotic pain medicines (such as codeine), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (such as ibuprofen), or potassium supplements. DO NOT START OR STOP ANY MEDICINE without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of asthma, dehydration, diabetes, dialysis, electrolyte problems (such as abnormal sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium levels), gout, heart problems, high blood cholesterol or lipid levels, kidney or liver problems, kidney stones, lupus, low blood volume, parathyroid gland problems, a salt-restricted diet, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have severe kidney problems or if you are unable to urinate. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. AN ADDITIONAL PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET is available with this medicine. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. TAKE THIS MEDICINE THE SAME WAY EACH TIME you take it, with regard to food. Taking this medicine with foods that are high in fat may decrease its effectiveness. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor. STORE THIS MEDICINE at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), in a tightly-closed container away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION (such as rash, hives, itching, trouble breathing) to a sulfonamide (such as sulfamethoxazole) or to an ACE inhibitor (such as enalapril), tell your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine. This medicine may cause a serious side effect called angioedema. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR AT ONCE if you develop swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or unexplained hoarseness. Laboratory and/or medical tests including kidney function, blood pressure, and blood electrolytes may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY AFFECT CERTAIN LAB TEST RESULTS. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. IF DIZZINESS OCCURS, sit up or stand slowly. Tell your doctor about the reaction. DEHYDRATION, EXCESSIVE SWEATING, VOMITING, OR DIARRHEA may increase the risk of low blood pressure with this medicine. Contact your doctor at once if any of these occur. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE DRINKING ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE WILL ADD TO THE EFFECTS of alcohol and other depressants (such as sleep aids, muscle relaxants). THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING A SALT SUBSTITUTE or other potassium supplement while taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: This medicine may cause birth defects or fetal death if you take it while you are pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, this medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include cough, dizziness, mild diarrhea, or flu-like symptoms (such as headache, muscle or joint aches, or tiredness). If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience decreased urination; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; increased thirst; muscle pain or cramps; or unusually dry mouth. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience fainting; irregular heartbeat; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; swelling of hands, legs, face, lips, eyes, throat, tongue, or trunk; difficulty swallowing or breathing; severe or persistent dizziness or lightheadedness; severe or persistent nausea or stomach pain; shortness of breath; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; unexplained hoarseness; or yellowing of the eyes or skin. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include fainting, severe dizziness or lightheadedness, very dry mouth, weakness, and weak or irregular heartbeat.

DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and pets. IF YOU WILL BE TAKING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, be sure to obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
