Chemical Name: CALCITRIOL (kal-si-TRYE-ole)
This medicine is a form of vitamin D used to manage certain conditions caused by high or low parathyroid hormone levels. It is used to manage low blood calcium levels in patients who are on chronic kidney dialysis. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking digoxin, cholestyramine, colestipol, corticosteroids (such as prednisone), ketoconazole, mineral oil, thiazide diuretics (such as hydrochlorothiazide), phenobarbital, phenytoin, or phosphate binders (such as calicum acetate). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including heart disease, kidney disease or stones, blood vessel disease (such as coronary artery disease), dehydration, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. TELL YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE HAD recent surgery or if you will be confined to a bed or chair for long periods of time. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE and you are taking 1 dose a day, take it as soon as possible. If you do not remember your dose until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, and alkaline phophatase levels may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while you are taking this medicine. FOLLOW THE DIETARY PLAN provided by your doctor. You will need to take care not to become dehydrated while you take this medicine. If you have normal kidney function, be sure to drink plenty of fluids. If you have kidney problems or are on dialysis, talk with your doctor about how much fluid you should drink each day. Discuss any questions with your doctor. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE of this medicine without checking with your doctor. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes vitamin and mineral supplements containing vitamin D or calcium, antacids containing magnesium or calcium, mineral oil, or products containing phosphorous. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST FEED while taking this medicine.
Calcitriol is usually well tolerated when taken as instructed. However, CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience constipation, decreased sex drive, diarrhea, difficult or painful urination, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, eye redness or irritation, fever, flushing, irregular heartbeat, increased body temperature, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, increased thirst, increased urination, mood or mental changes, unusual weakness, headache, runny nose, sensitivity to light, bone or muscle pain, metallic taste, or unexplained weight loss. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe weakness, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and severe dizziness.
Carry an identification card at all times that says you are taking this medicine. Follow all instructions given by your doctor for a well-balanced diet. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and pets. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
