Chemical Name: GLUCAGON (GLOO-ka-gon)

Common uses
This medicine is a hormone used to treat severe low blood sugar in patients with diabetes treated with insulin that are unable to take sugar by mouth. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking warfarin or beta-blockers (such as metoprolol). Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including malnutrition, adrenal gland problems, heart problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have certain tumors (such as insulinoma or pheochromocytoma). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. IF YOU ARE USING THIS MEDICINE AT HOME, a healthcare professional will provide detailed instructions for its appropriate use. Ask them any questions that you may have about your medicine or giving injections. BE SURE THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY KNOW HOW TO USE THIS MEDICINE BEFORE YOU NEED IT. THIS MEDICINE MUST BE MIXED BEFORE USING IT. Be sure to follow the procedure demonstrated to you to prevent contamination of the vial, syringe or medicine. TO MIX THIS MEDICINE: Take the orange cap off the vial. Pull the cover off the needle. Insert the needle into the vial through the rubber stopper. Empty the contents of the syringe into the vial. Without removing the needle from the vial, GENTLY SHAKE THE VIAL until the powder is completely dissolved. If the medicine contains particles, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it. Turn the vial upside down and draw the correct dose back into the syringe. Remove any air bubbles that may be trapped in the syringe. PULL THE NEEDLE OUT OF THE VIAL. Be careful to not pull the plunger out of the syringe. CAREFULLY CHECK that you have drawn the correct dose before administration. TO MAKE THE INJECTION: Make sure the patient is lying on his or her side. This will help to prevent choking or vomiting when the patient awakes. Inject this medicine into the outer thigh. AFTER MAKING THE INJECTION: Feed the patient as soon as he or she awakens and is able to swallow. First give the patient a fast acting source of sugar (such as juice), then give the patient a long acting source of sugar (such as crackers or cheese). GIVE A SECOND DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE AND SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION if the patient does not wake up in 15 minutes. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F, (20 and 25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE AFTER MIXING unless the solution is clear and of water-like consistency. CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE ON THIS MEDICINE. If it expires before you mix it, replace it. THIS MEDICINE TREATS low blood sugar. Symptoms of low blood sugar are increased heartbeat, headache, chills, sweating, tremor, increased hunger, changes in vision, nervousness, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, disorientation, unconsciousness, or seizures. IF YOU HAVE A LOW BLOOD SUGAR REACTION AND YOU USE THIS MEDICINE TELL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. To prevent hypoglycemia, eat meals on a regular schedule and do not skip meals. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include, nausea or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include persistent or severe nausea or vomiting or rapid pulse rate.

Additional information
CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE on this medicine regularly, and replace it so you always have a non-expired product available. Carry an identification card at all times that says you are diabetic. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly according to your doctor's directions. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.
