Chemical Name: PROMETHAZINE (proe-METH-a-zeen) and DEXTROMETHORPHAN (dex-troe-meth-OR-fan)
This medicine is a phenothiazine antihistamine and cough suppressant combination used to treat cough and to relieve runny nose, sneezing, or watery eyes due to colds, flu, allergy, or hay fever. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
WARNING: THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE SEVERE AND SOMETIMES FATAL BREATHING PROBLEMS in children less than 2 years of age. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE in children under 2 years old. USE CAUTION WHEN GIVING THIS MEDICINE TO CHILDREN over 2 years old. Do not give this medicine with any other medicines that can cause breathing problems. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking furazolidone, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or medicine for depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (SSRIs). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking levodopa, meperidine, or tramadol. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Use of this medicine in children under age 2 is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor or on the package. THIS MEDICINE MAY BE TAKEN WITH FOOD if it upsets your stomach. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE and you are using it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for a cough with a lot of mucus. Do not use it for a long-term cough (eg, caused by asthma, emphysema, smoking). However, you may use it for these conditions if your doctor tells you to. If your cough or other symptoms persist for more than 1 week or if you have a fever, rash, or persistent headache, check with your doctor. AVOID ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE WILL ADD TO THE EFFECTS of alcohol and other depressants (such as sleep aids or tranquilizers). Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS, DIZZINESS, OR BLURRED VISION. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. THIS MEDICINE MAY INTERFERE WITH CERTAIN ALLERGY TESTS. If you are scheduled for a skin test, talk to your doctor. You may need to stop takng this medicine for a few days before the tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any medicines containing an antihistamine or cough suppressant. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine. CAUTION IS ADVISED IN USING THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine, especially excitability. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, throat, or nose, excitability, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness or anxiety, trouble sleeping, upset stomach, vomiting, or weakness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience difficulty urinating or inability to urinate; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; seizures; severe dizziness, lightheadedness, or headache; stomach pain; tremor; trouble sleeping; or vision changes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea; vomiting; blurred vision; drowsiness; slowed breathing; large, unchanging pupils; seizures; and deep sleep or loss of consciousness.
If your symptoms do not improve within 5 days or if you develop a high fever, rash, or persistent headache, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and pets.
