Chemical Name: ITRACONAZOLE (IT-ra-KON-a-zole)

Common uses
This medicine is an azole antifungal agent used to treat fungal infections.

Before using
WARNING: This medicine should not be used to treat a fungal infection of the toenail or fingernail (onychomycosis) in patients with heart problems (eg, history of congestive heart failure). Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of congestive heart failure such as swelling of the hands, ankles, feet, or abdomen; bloating; shortness of breath; fast or irregular heartbeat; severe or persistent nausea; or confusion. Use of this medicine along with certain other medicines may increase your risk of serious and sometimes fatal heart problems, including irregular heartbeat. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF you are also taking cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, dofetilide, or levacetylmethadol (levomethadyl). Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking an aldosterone blocker (such as eplerenone), alfuzosin, alprazolam, conivaptan, nisoldipine, certain medicines for sleep or anxiety (such as midazolam or triazolam), certain blood vessel constrictors called ergot alkaloids (such as dihydroergotamine, ergometrine, ergotamine or methylergometrine), certain medicines that reduce cholesterol (such as simvastatin or lovastatin), certain antimycobacterials (such as rifabutin or rifampin), erythromycin, nevirapine, certain medicines for migraine headache (such as eletriptan or almotriptan), or certain non-sedating allergy medicines (such as terfenadine or astemizole). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you take other prescription and nonprescription medicines (eg, used for infections, HIV, seizures, anxiety, sleep, heartburn, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart problems, high blood pressure, allergies, irregular heartbeat, pain, blood thinning, asthma, migraines, mood or mental problems, cancer, prostate problems, immune system suppression, erectile dysfunction, urinary problems, or contraception [birth control]), multivitamin products, and herbal or dietary supplements. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a history of HIV infection, weakened immune system, nerve problems, heart problems (such as congestive heart failure), swelling or fluid retention, liver problems (such as cirrhosis, abnormal liver enzyme tests, or drug-induced liver damage), kidney problems, severe lung problems (such as COPD), digestive problems (such as low stomach acid), allergies, pregnancy, breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED to treat fungal infections of the toenail or fingernail (onychomycosis) in patients who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or who have certain heart problems (such as a history of congestive heart failure). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Directions
Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. TAKE THIS MEDICINE after a full meal. If you have low stomach acid or you take medicine to reduce stomach acid, take this medicine with a cola beverage. DO NOT TAKE ANTACIDS within 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking this medicine. If you also take a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) (such as omeprazole), take it at least 2 hours after you take this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. TO CLEAR UP YOUR INFECTION COMPLETELY, continue taking this medicine for the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Do not miss any doses. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS OR MONTHS for this medicine to work. Do not stop using this medicine without checking with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function tests may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Do not switch between the capsule and oral solution forms of this medicine without checking with your doctor. Effectiveness and side effects of these forms of this medicine may be different, even at the same dose. FOR WOMEN TAKING BIRTH CONTROL PILLS, this medicine may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pill. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control. FOR WOMEN TAKING THIS MEDICINE TO TREAT A FUNGAL INFECTION OF THE TOENAIL OR FINGERNAIL (onychomycosis): If you may become pregnant, you must use an effective form of birth control while you take this medicine and for 2 months after you stop taking it. Talk with your doctor about effective methods of birth control. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE CAN CAUSE HARM to the human fetus. IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE to treat fungal infections of the toenails or fingernails (onychomycosis) if you are pregnant. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, this medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include headache, dizziness, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, and mild stomach pain or upset. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience bloating; chest pain; confusion; depression; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; shortness of breath; sudden weight gain; swollen or tender stomach; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; unusual tiredness; loss of appetite; severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain; dark urine; pale stools; yellowing of the eyes or skin; tingling or numbness of the hands or feet; unusual bruising or bleeding; or reddened, blistered or swollen skin. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
