Chemical Name: SELENIUM SULFIDE (se-LEE-nee-um SUL-fide)
This medicine is a cytostatic and antifungal agent used to treat a certain type of skin irritation of the scalp (seborrheic dermatitis) and dandruff. It may also be used to treat a type of fungal infection of the skin (tinea versicolor) or other conditions as determined by your doctor.
INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may damage jewelry. REMOVE JEWELRY before using this medicine. TO TREAT DANDRUFF OR SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS OF THE SCALP: Massage 1 or 2 teaspoonfuls of the medicine into the wet scalp. Leave on scalp for 2 to 3 minutes then rinse scalp thoroughly in cool running water to reduce the risk of hair discoloration, especially if you are using this medicine before or after bleaching, tinting or permanent waving products. TO TREAT TINEA VERSICOLOR: Apply a sufficient amount of the medicine to the affected areas and lather with a small amount of water. Leave the medicine on the skin for 10 minutes then rinse thoroughly. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin well after using this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. Do not freeze. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE MORE OFTEN or for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE ON BROKEN, SWOLLEN, OR BLISTERED SKIN. Do not use any other medicines or special cleansers on the affected areas unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. AVOID GETTING THIS MEDICINE IN YOUR EYES, on the inside of your nose or mouth, on genital areas, or on skin folds as it may cause skin irritation or burning. If you get this medicine on any of these areas, rinse thoroughly with water. FOR WOMEN: DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant. IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT, contact your doctor immediately. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include an increase in mild hair loss or thinning, hair discoloration, or oiliness or dryness of hair and scalp. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience skin irritation. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. THIS MEDICINE MAY BE HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED. If you or someone you know may have taken this medicine by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
If your symptoms do not improve within 1 to 2 weeks or if they become worse, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF YOU WILL BE USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, be sure to obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
