Chemical Name: SALICYLIC ACID (SAL-i-SIL-ik AS-id)
This medicine is a keratolytic used to remove excess skin in certain conditions, including calluses, warts, or dry, scaly skin. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. This includes aspirin or other salicylates (such as methyl salicylate). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticoagulants (such as heparin, warfarin), aspirin, methotrexate, or sulfonylureas (such as tolbutamide). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you have or have recently had a flu-like illness (such as fever, chills, sore throat), chicken pox, or any other type of viral infection. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including liver or kidney problems, a skin infection, skin irritation, diabetes, poor blood circulation, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR if you are a child or teenager who has recently had an influenza vaccine (such as flu shot). Use of this medicine in children under age 2 is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Before using this medicine for the first time, you must prime the pump. To do this, shake vigorously; hold the can upright away from the face, then press down on the pump for 3 to 5 seconds or until the foam appears. SHAKE WELL before each use. TO USE A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, hold the can upright and dispense the medicine into the palm of the hand. Apply the medicine to the affected area and rub in completely. Cover the area with a bandage or dressing (if practical) unless your doctor has instructed you not to. Wipe off any excess foam from the pump after use. APPLY THIS MEDICINE at bedtime and wash it off in the morning unless your doctor tells you otherwise. For best results, soak the affected area with water for at least 5 minutes before you use this medicine. Wash your hands immediately after using this medicine, unless your hands are being treated. IF EXCESSIVE SKIN DRYING OR IRRITATION OCCURS, check with your doctor. You may be able to use a mild cream or skin lotion on the area. STORE THIS MEDICINE upright, at room temperature, between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C). Do not freeze. Do not expose to temperatures greater than 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). Do not puncture, break, or burn the canister even if it appears to be empty. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or if you are allergic to any ingredient in this product. If you have had a severe allergic reaction (such as severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to aspirin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib) tell your doctor before using this medicine. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE LONGER OR MORE OFTEN than prescribed without checking with your doctor. This medicine is for external use only. AVOID GETTING THIS MEDICINE IN YOUR EYES, on the inside of your nose and mouth, or on your genitals. If contact with your eyes occurs, rinse right away with water. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE on open skin wounds, moles, birthmarks, genital warts, warts on the face, or warts growing hair. Do not apply this medicine to normal healthy skin or skin that is reddened, irritated, or infected. Check with your doctor if you have a condition that covers a large area of the body. THIS MEDICINE MAY AFFECT CERTAIN LAB TEST RESULTS. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this medicine. Talk with your doctor before you use any other medicines or cleansers on your skin. THIS MEDICINE CONTAINS A SALICYLATE. Salicylates have been linked to Reye's syndrome. DO NOT GIVE THIS MEDICINE TO CHILDREN OR TEENAGERS during or after chickenpox, flu, or other viral infections without checking with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist for more information. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes aspirin or other salicylates. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while using this medicine. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, this medicine may cause false test results with some urine glucose tests. Check with your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine or changing your diet.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include mild burning or stinging at the application site. If it continues or becomes bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience diarrhea; dizziness; hearing loss or ringing in the ears; mood or mental changes; nausea; vomiting; severe burning, peeling, redness, scaling, or stinging skin; or unusual weakness or fatigue. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include agitation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, loss of hearing, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), seizures, sluggishness, rapid or difficult breathing, diarrhea, mental disturbances, and yellowing of the eyes or skin. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
