Chemical Name: OMEPRAZOLE (o-MEP-ra-zole)
This medicine is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat frequent heartburn that occurs 2 or more days in a week. It works by blocking acid production in the stomach. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking cilostazol, clopidogrel, benzodiazepine-type medicines such as diazepam, digoxin, HIV protease inhibitors, itraconazole, ketoconazole, sucralfate, voriconazole, or warfarin. DO NOT START OR STOP ANY MEDICINE without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including other stomach problems such as tumors, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. DO NOT USE this medicine if you have trouble or pain when swallowing food, vomiting with blood, or bloody or black stools. Certain types of heartburn should not be treated with this medicine and should be reported to your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING THIS MEDICINE if you have had heartburn longer than 3 months, heartburn with dizziness or sweating, frequent wheezing with heartburn, or stomach pain. Heartburn complaints may be a symptom of serious heart problems, such as a heart attack. Therefore, CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING THIS MEDICINE if you have a history of chest pain or shoulder pain that occurs with shortness of breath; sweating; pain spreading to arms, neck, or shoulders; unexplained weight loss, or persistent nausea and vomiting. Use of this medicine in children and adolescents under age 18 is not recommended without doctor approval. Discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor or on the package. This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions you may have about this medicine. SWALLOW WHOLE. DO NOT break, crush, or chew before swallowing. Take this medicine before a meal, unless otherwise directed by your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine may be taken with antacids if your doctor has instructed you to take antacids. Omeprazole can decrease the effectiveness of sucralfate and other medicines such as the antifungals ketoconazole and itraconazole. If you are taking any of these medicines with omeprazole, consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding when to take each dose. For example, if you are taking sucralfate and omeprazole, it is best to take the omeprazole at least 30 minutes before sucralfate. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, light, and moisture. CONTINUE TAKING THIS MEDICINE for the full 14 days of therapy even if you feel better unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take more than one dose every 24 hours. Do not take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. This medicine is not intended to give immediate heartburn relief. It may take up to 4 days for this medicine to work. STOP TAKING THIS MEDICINE AND CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR if you need to take this medicine for longer than 14 days or if you need to take this medicine more often than 14 days every 4 months (unless you have been directed to do so by your doctor.) You may have a condition more serious than heartburn and other treatment may be needed. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. BREAST-FEEDING WHILE USING THIS MEDICINE is not recommended.
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include headache, constipation, cough, dizziness, or rash. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, unusual sweating, blurred vision, or unusually fast heartbeat.
Certain lifestyle changes may help you manage heartburn symptoms including, not eating late at night or just before bed; avoiding rich, fatty, or spicy foods; eating small meals; eating slowly; or quitting smoking. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for other suggestions or more information. IF YOUR SYMPTOMS do not improve or if they become worse, contact your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children.
