Chemical Name: MESALAMINE (me-SAL-a-meen)

Common uses
This medicine is an anti-inflammatory agent used to treat inflammatory bowel disease including ulcerative colitis.

Before using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking probenecid or sulfinpyrazone. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking salicylates (eg, aspirin), carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (eg, acetazolamide), meglitinide antidiabetics (eg, repaglinide), sulfonylureas (eg, glipizide), valproic acid, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), gingko biloba extract, corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), insulin, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril), beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), or spironolactone. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of liver or kidney problems, certain stomach problems (eg, pyloric stenosis), Kawasaki syndrome, a rheumatic (imflammatory) disease (eg, rheumatoid arthritis), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Use of this medicine is not recommended if you are younger than 18 years of age and you have the flu or chickenpox or have recently received a live vaccine (eg, varicella, influenza). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. IF THE SUPPOSITORY IS TOO SOFT TO USE, put it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes or run cold water over it. Then remove the wrapper and moisten the suppository with cool water. Lie down on your side. Use your finger to push the pointed end of the suppository well up into the rectum. Wash your hands thoroughly after using this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE in a cool place, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to aspirin or any medicine containing aspirin. A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so. IF YOUR SYMPTOMS DO NOT IMPROVE or if they worsen after you start using this medicine, check with your doctor. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. CONTINUE USING THIS MEDICINE FOR the entire course of treatment. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including kidney and liver function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. THIS MEDICINE has been linked to Reye's Syndrome. DO NOT GIVE THIS MEDICINE TO CHILDREN OR TEENAGERS during or after chickenpox, flu, or other viral infections. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you have received a live vaccine (eg, varicella, influenza) within the past 6 weeks. Contact your doctor with any questions or concerns. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU BECOME PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include flu-like symptoms; gas; hemorrhoids; mild headache; mild stomach discomfort or pain; nausea; or rectal pain. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience back, leg, or joint pain; dark, bloody, or tarry stools; bloody or coffee ground-like vomit; chest pain; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; hair loss; severe headache; shortness of breath; sudden or severe stomach pain or cramping; unusual bruising or bleeding. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
