Chemical Name: RABIES (RAY-beez) VACCINE
This medicine is a vaccine used to prevent rabies virus infection in those who have a known or suspected exposure to the virus or in those who have a high risk of being exposed to the virus. It may also be used along with another medicine (Human Rabies Immune Globulin, HRIG) in certain patients.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking medicine to prevent malaria (such as mefloquine or hydroxychloroquine), corticosteroids (such as prednisone), medicines that suppress your immune system (such as cyclosporine or tacrolimus), if you have had previous rabies vaccinations, or if you have ever been treated with Human Rabies Immune Globulin (HRIG). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including immune system problems, infection or contact with someone who has an infectious disease, radiation therapy, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine is usually administered as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. If the medicine contains particles, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if it is past the expiration date on the package or container. This medicine is administered as an injection into the muscle (IM). DO NOT inject this medicine under the skin (SQ) or into a vein (IV). USE THIS MEDICINE IMMEDIATELY after mixing. STORE THIS MEDICINE in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2-8 degrees C). Protect from light. CONTINUE USING THIS MEDICINE for the full course of treatment even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor immediately.
DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you have had a severe allergic reaction it it, to any ingredient in this product, or to eggs and DO NOT have a known or suspected exposure to the rabies virus. IF YOU DO HAVE A KNOWN OR SUSPECTED EXPOSURE TO THE RABIES VIRUS, USE THIS MEDICINE WITH CAUTION even if you have had an allergic reaction to it, to any ingredient in this product, or to eggs. You may need to take other medicines to lessen your risk of an allergic reaction or to treat the allergic reaction if it occurs. Consult your doctor for further information. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so. DO NOT STOP USING THIS MEDICINE without first checking with your doctor. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including antibody levels, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. THIS MEDICINE CONTAINS ALBUMIN, which comes from human blood. There is an extremely rare risk of developing a viral disease, or a central nervous system disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. No cases of viral diseases or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from albumin have been identified. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include weakness; tiredness; mild headache; muscle or joint tenderness or aches; dizziness; nausea; or pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience fever, swelling of the glands in your neck or armpits, or vision changes. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience severe headache, stiff neck, severe muscle weakness, paralysis, or irregular heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if an allergic reaction occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEIDICNE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringe, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask you doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.
