I got my first cold sore ever five months ago--I was miserable. I tried everything: abreva, carmex, hydrogen peroxide, toothpaste, dyi treatments. The drugstore stuff didn't help and my homemade remedies only made things worse. Also, I used up the abreva pump within a day--what a rip off. My cold sore lasted for two whole weeks, and to top it all off, after my scabs peeled off, I was left with scarring (thankfully, the scars have now pretty much disappeared).

Fast-forward to July and those suckers have now come back! Just in time for a work gala. Ugh. After doing some research, I bought Campho-Phenique and started applying generously towards the end of the first day of blistering. It's really too bad I couldn't get this product earlier because it is now day 3 and my blisters have now flattened, shrunk and dried out. Fingers crossed: looks like I've missed the weeping stage and have gone straight to the healing stage. Wohoo! Anyway, my cold sore stages are not yet complete, so perhaps I shouldn't put the chicken before the egg. But, really, I have no more pain, make up is easy to apply on top of this, and the redness is much less noticeable. Note: I probably used way more than the recommended dose, but I haven't had any adverse effects and still have a lot of product left in the tube.

Two tips: #1: whatever you do, don't pick your sores. If you do, wash your hands immediately and reapply this product. #2: cover up your sore any way you can while in the shower, etc. Water will slow the healing process, unfortunately.

I don't think this product actually speeded the recovery of my cold sores (slits on the corners of my mouth that lasted a few weeks), but it did provide some relief by numbing them for about an hour. I got a couple small pimples around my mouth where the ointment had smeared a little, but it's a small price to pay for relief. That could also have been from the vaseline I put on them.

I tried the other expensive product Abreva and not only did it not work as fast as advertised, it was white where everyone could see it. Campho phenique is better, works quicker and is clear where only I am aware of cold sore and it is cheaper!!! Good job, I used this back in the day and will never use anything ever again. Thank you for a product that actually works and is value priced.

It works well, but the smell is really bad. I love the Zicam gel swabs, but went to Walxxs and seemed that it didn't carry it any more. I can't even find it at Zicam's offical website.

I felt a cold sore was coming last night so I put this on over night and continued to apply on a few times during the day today. It helped to dry up the cold sores very quickly and stop them from growing any bigger... it works awesome!!! My cold sore has already become a scab in just a day!!! the only con is it dries up the skin and smells very bad...which doesn't bother me much.

Where did all the reviews go? I've tried a lot of coldsore-relief products, and I use this on my coldsores after they have already formed. It dries them up without bothering your skin, and helps minimize them. I never have a noticeable coldsore while using this, and I think they go away a lot faster with this product. Another plus is that it is a clear product. It does have a medicinal smell, but is not bothersome to me. Try this, you won't be sorry.

I occasionally get cold sores. The last time I had one...it was really bad. So I decided to try Abreva and it did NOT work at all! [$] went down the drain, basically. I used a whole tube of it and it didn't go away for over a month! Recently, I got a cold sore again. I tried Campho-phenique...and I was very pleased with it! I got it for [$] something at [...]. I applied it three times a day, as recommended, and it went completely away in under a week. PROS: Effective at removing cold sores, works quickly, cheap.CONS: Tastes BAD (do not use before eating or drinking!), can make skin on lips flaky. The "drying action" can make your lip skin flaky... What I did was as soon as I saw my lip skin flaking, I briskly rubbed it off with my finger, then washed my finger off with soap and water. It hurt a little (rubbing the skin off), but a few days later, the cold sore was completely gone. So the benefits outweigh the pain! OVERALL: If you have a cold sore, buy this stuff! Either here or for real cheap, [...]. Don't fall for Abreva. It's all hype and no delivery for me. Campo-phenique works much quicker, more effectively, and cheaper than Abreva in my opinion.

This is the best thing I've found to dry up fully present cold sores. If I catch it before it surfaces (red, tingly) then Abreva works really well, but if I wake up with an already present cold sore this is my go-to product. You do have to reapply it every few hours, but the product is clear and REALLY does dry up the cold sore super fast, but without being too harsh on your skin. After a day and a half of treatment the cold sore is virtually gone. FYI, it does smell a little bit like Vick's, but isn't bothersome to me. One tube lasts a long time.
