I had been using this and ran out before I realized I needed to reorder. Can't purchase this locally, so I chose the most widely marketed brand. I was shocked at how much better Seventh Generation worked in comparison. Better for the environment and better cleaning. I won't make the same mistake again.

by Kat[Verified Buyer] in Nashville, TN on 8/31/09
Pros: Eco-Friendly, Effective
Cons: Occasional Spots
Describe Yourself: Meticulous Cleaner
Best Uses: Cleaning, Home
Bottom Line: recommended
I've been using this detergent for more than a year and have loved it from the start. It does leave occasional spots on my dishes, but 9 times out of 10 it cleans beautifully--and the 10th time is worth the hassle for a "green" product. I recently moved to a house with a 25-year-old dishwasher, and it works just as well in that machine as it did in the 5-year-old dishwasher at my previous house. And for protecting my family (and the planet) from harsh chemicals, it's definitely worth the price premium!
Seventh Generation Natural Automatic Dishwashing Detergent, Free & Clear rates 4 out of 5 stars, from 103 customer reviews.Straightforward, Non-Toxic Detergent
by RamenFreak[Verified Reviewer] in Hoboken, NJ on 8/19/09
Pros: Easy to Use, Efficient
Describe Yourself: Casual Cleaner
Bottom Line: recommended
A lot of reviewers are complaining that this detergent leaves residue on their dishes/glasses. I found the same thing to be true only if/when I use too much detergent. A little bit really goes a long way with this powder. I fill the hinged detergent receptacle just under half way and I never put detergent in the pre-wash receptacle. I usually use either Seventh Generation or the dish powder made by BiOKleen. I love that this soap is fragrance free and because I don't pour a ton of it into the machine, it lasts a really long time. I've noticed that the particles are much bigger than the particles in the other brand I use- I think maybe this is why it leaves white spots on some glassware. So for those who wrote poor reviews and still have some of this detergent laying around, try decreasing the amount you put in your machine. Your dishes will come out clean and spotless! :)

by metametagirl[Verified Reviewer] in Santa Clara, CA on 7/19/09
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: Weak Function
Describe Yourself: Casual Cleaner
Bottom Line: not recommended
This dish detergent left a white film over my pots, black plastics (i.e. spatula, coffee press parts), silverware. The bowls and plates look fine, but those are all white to begin with, so I can't really tell if the white film is present. I have hard water and an old dishwasher -- not sure if either of those are the culprit. I do know a neighbor who has the same water and dishwasher without the problem (using a different detergent). I experienced something similar with a Trader Joe's detergent, but the Seventh Generation is far worse. Still in search of a dish detergent that will not harm my dishes nor the environment.

You must make sure the dispenser is completely dry prior to putting in the powder otherwise it will clump up and not dispense during the wash. This happened with the little packs of dish detergent also made by Seventh Generation as well. I am a firm believer of green products so this is a small inconvenience. (I have a Kenmore Pro dishwasher)
