I am not sure if it does anything, however I noticed that I did have gas: burping mainly. And an upset stomach (like when you have acid), but I wasn't sure if it was from the 5-htp. Yesterday afternoon I took another pill (with food), and it caused some real pain in my stomach! I felt out of sorts for about an hour after that with some residual pain until the next morning. I don't think the possible benefit is worth the burning in the stomach. I do not have stomach problems as a rule.

I was put on an antidepressant after a very stressful episode in my life. The antidepressant caused nasty side effects that just added to my problems instead of helping. I ran across an article on 5-HTP and thought I'd try it but not expecting much. After about 2 weeks I found I was not over reacting to anything and I was feeling more like my old self. I decided to keep it up and I think it really works much better than the prescription pills ever did. I found I slept better when I took 100mg in the mornings and 50mg just before bed. If you get better sleep you can handle life better.

After having good results with the local health food store's 5-HTP, I tried the less expensive Nature's Way version, taking 2 50mg tablets spread throughout the day. No matter when I took them, I couldn't sleep--the opposite of the desired effect! With Natrol, I take 1 100mg tablet in the evening and start feeling sleepy within 30 minutes. I am also less hungry, and my mood is better. It's worth the extra money. The only drawback is the gelatin; I'm vegetarian and avoid gelatin.

I started using this to help with anxiety brought on by perimenopause and stress. It definitely helps a lot. I use it on an as needed basis. At one point I was on serafem (which is a low dose of prozac) but I found side effects from this drug so I stopped taking it. I have to say the 5 HTP at this dosage (100mg) worked better than the serafem with the only side effect being feeling tired.

This product true biz helps keep the blues away! Of course, only along with eating right, staying active, getting plently of rest , fresh air & having a positive attitude. It's not a magic pill, but it really does help if you are honestly already taking care of your whole self & still find yourself on the moody side. We lost our health insurance and I could no longer afford to take lexapro- which was not fully helping me in the first place- so I looked for alternatives and thought I would give this a try. I consider myself severly depressed and soon after taking this I started feeling calmer and happier. I take 2 -50gm tablets in the morning and 1 in the afternoon, but you are supposed to start out with only one and not go over 200 mg a day. Initially it did cause me to use the bathroom more often but two weeks into the treatment that has stopped. I tried several different medicines for my depression and can honestly say this is has worked best.

I think this stuff is great!! I have taken prescription anti-depressants in the past with no noticeable difference... only nasty side effects. I have also taken st.john's wort without seeing a real difference. This has helped me greatly. There are no side-effects and it has also helped me sleep better at night without making me tired during the day. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
