I have short, very thick hair which tends to just hang there due to its weight. I don't use this product for spikes but rather to add body and keep my hair in place and out of my eyes. A little bit goes a long way. I use it like regular gel - i.e., comb through wet hair, style and blow dry. I do use a leave-in conditioner (Infusium) before applying this stuff. I think it makes it easier to wash out when shampooing. I also don't use it every time. I think it has a bit of a drying effect which can be avoided by alternating it with other products.
