I found that the smaller amount works just fine. It took a little getting use to. Then it was like an old friend. Told my dentist this worked best, and lasted all night. It is NOT a gel anymore - it is now runny, tastes bad, and is also sweetened with sorbitol and xylitol (originally only contained xylitol). I do not know what I am going to do now that Biotene has made this USELESS to help with my dry mouth. Over the years I have tried many different brands and none were as effective as the ORIGINAL Biotene Dry Mouth Gel. I am now looking for something to replace this terrible product. I don't know why companies change good products - I suppose this change will make a bigger profit IF they do not lose all their customers. I have not even mentioned that it now also contains Propylparaben (a not so good for you preservative). I have not looked up all the new ingredients to see where they come from. Here is what is in the "new improved pH balance" Biotene Oral Balance Dry Mouth Gel: Glycerine, Water, Sorbitol, Xylitol, Carbomer, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Sodium Hydroxide, Propylparaben. The ingredients are VERY different, it is not a minor change. I wish they still offered the ORIGINAL. I can only hope I can find something from another company that will help my dry mouth. I have used this product for about 5 years, along with other Biotene products. Being a gel, it lasts longer than liquids, which is why I use it during the night. I would recommend it highly. Biotrust Gel helps my mouth feel better instantly and I sleep much better through the night. We also used it for my brother and mother when they were in the hospital and needed moisture in their mouth.
