This stuff is great for intense sun conditions like in sunny weather over water or snow (which reflects the sunlight effectively doubling your sun exposure) as I find sunburn to be the main cause of chapped/cracked lips along with cold sores. If you have a cold sore in the very early stages (a tingle and like a tiny white dot), applying regularly (every few hours) keeps it under control (prevents it from growing into a big angry, red, and painful sore), instead if grows only a little and more noticeably it doesn't get red, irritated, and painful.

Use this product at the first sign of tingling and it will eliminate sores before they can crack and become painful. I even use it to soothe my lips when they get dry and chapped

For many, many years I have used Herpecin L. I just recently bought two new tubes of it. I have had fever blisters for as long as I can remember, but since I found the Herpecin L I haven't had one at all. At the first tingle that tells me that one is coming, I start using it, and it never breaks out. This time, it DID NOT work. It broke out and now as broken open and has become a typical fever blister, with oozing and pain. I compared the ingredients in an old tube and a new tube, and find that they are completely different. Why would you take a product that works every time and change to ingredients that don't work at all? Please put back the Padimate O and the Allantoin. I don't think I'll be using this product any longer.

I'm 56 and I've been getting cold sores since I was a kid. My last outbreak was 2 weeks ago and was particularly bad. As soon as I felt it starting I used Zovirax (an anti-viral prescription drug) for a few days and it didn't help. Then I switched to Abreva. It just got worse and actually spread into a few more small cold sores. In desperation I bought HerpecinL and got immediate relief. It really soothed the sores and helped my lips which were very dry and cracked by this time from all the meds. Within a few days the cold sores were gone. I've been using it every day and night since and my lips have never been softer or in better shape re not being chapped in the winter time. I'll never be without it. And ps - the white is easily covered by lipgloss or lipstick. But even using it alone it absorbs into the lips pretty quickly and the white color disappears.

Every year i get 3-4 breakouts of 'cold sores' i thought for sure this would be a problem so far i've had this product for 4 months not a breakout since. Every Dec of my life i've had at least one breakout not this year. I even saw people walking around at school with breakouts covering them up. But i was not one of them. I currently own two sticks of them one in the car and one in the bathroom at home. I put it on twice a day at least in the morning and at night and whenever i'm in the car riding around this chapstick is on me. it smells nice too i thought.

Pros: Effective, Healing
Best Uses: Daily Use
I am 29 years old and have had cold sores about once a month for as long as i can remember. I have never met anyone who had cold sores as badly as me. I started using Herpecin a year ago and I have not had a single cold sore since. I apply the lip balm most days, but am not rigorous about it. I use it more when i would normally get a cold sore (high stress, hot, cold etc.), and less at other times. Of course correlation is not causation, and it is hard to generalize from a sample of one, but it certainly seems that the product is worth a try.

I get cold sores all over the lower part of my face. Herpecin L is ok for the price. But it's not a cure, or a miracle healer (more a preventative, I think). It does what it says, helps treat and relieve cold sores. It does not make my cold sores go away faster or swell less, but does keep them from cracking and getting seepy (which is why it gets 3 stars). This formula might be more effective as a treatment if they added more Lysine - it's not in the active ingredient list! It's mostly made up of sunscreens, and contains talc. I will be buying Super Lysine + to try next.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I tried this product the very first time I had a cold sore and it did nothing except make my lips feel sticky and look chalky. And why would you use a stick of lip balm on a cold sore anyway? So you can spread more sores to uninfected parts of your lips? It did an ok job of moisturizing, but if I'm going to use an OTC product for my cold sores, I'll stick to Carmex in a jar. It at least has an analgesic to help with the pain, and if you're like me, you wash your hands before and after you apply it.

I use this every day to prevent cold sores. Prior to using it, I would get a cold sore every 3 months. I have not had one for almost a year now. It has a pleasant scent and texture, but if you apply too much, it can make your lips a little white, so I just use it before bed or under lipstick. I have tried many other creams for cold sores, and nothing has ever worked so well.
