Aveeno Baby Sunblock Lotion, Continuous Protection, SPF 55 rates 2 out of 5 stars, from 30 customer reviews.Great for City wear, not the beach
by dancer79[Verified Reviewer] in NYC on 8/19/09
Pros: Attractive Design, Easy Assembly, Sturdy
Cons: Not Weather Resistant
Describe Yourself: Non-parent
Best Uses: Individual Play, Small Children
Bottom Line: not recommended
My roommate got this from her dermatologist friend. I am a FAIR skinned girl, and thought many applications of this for my sensitive skin would work, but 55 is not high enough, and it kept washing off in the ocean no matter how long I waited for it to soak in (at least 20 min) Not to mention when it was working, I ended up tanning. I think this works best for what it is supposed to be, for small children playing in a wading pool in the shade. But if you're like me living in NYC, it's great for everyday use in the city. I've used ROC spf 60 during a heat wave in Paris, and that stayed on my skin much better, regardless of how much I was sweating.

This product says nothing about not irritating the eyes, but I bought it and used it on my 11 month baby girl. Of course, the minute I put it on her arms and hands, she rubbed her eyes and immediately started screaming. I'm assuming that's because it burned her eyes. Ugh. Still looking for one that won't cause her to cry! Perhaps Neutrogena!

by Michelle a.k.a. Dr. Mom[Verified Reviewer] in St. Louis on 5/22/09
Cons: Allergy Issues
Describe Yourself: Parent Of Two Or More Children
Bottom Line: not recommended
My two boys (ages 10 and 1) both had issues with this product -- just as Heather described below. I bought this brand of sunscreen because Aveeno has a reputation of being one of the best for your skin. This was absolutely not the case for my two boys. The moment they both went outside they developed a red prickly rash and some hives. In addition, with my oldest son, his faced swelled to the point where his cheeks looked like he had the mumps. In my baby, his eyes swelled and his nose began running. The moment I washed the the sunscreen off, the reaction began to subside. I also gave Benadryl to help with the rash and runny nose. Please be cautious with this sunscreen. I've obviously used sunscreen on my oldest child for many years and this sort of reaction has never occurred. This is the first time, however, that we've used Aveeno Baby 55 and I will never use it again. I am also going to contact the company about this. I wish I would have known to test this product on a small patch of skin. I had never even heard of this type of reaction that Heather described below, but she has explained exactly what happened to my kids. Please be cautious with your children on this product. It is definitely not the safest sunscreen for their skin, despite the Aveeno reputation.
Aveeno Baby Sunblock Lotion, Continuous Protection, SPF 55 rates 1 out of 5 stars, from 30 customer reviews.Beware of chemicals

Please be cautious if your child has eczema, sensitive skin, or allergies in general. My son broke out in a horrible red, hot, rash (very much like sunburn) as well as hives all over his body last weekend after applying this sunblock. It was extremely uncomfortable to say the least, and by the next day his eyes were almost swollen shut. After taking him to the doctor and doing extensive research online about sunscreen allergies, I have discovered that all 5 active ingredients are chemicals known to cause severe reactions (avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and oxybenzone). It is far safer to use the physical barrier sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) than the chemical ones. And no matter what product you use, first apply a small amount both in and out of the sun to fully test. Some people react to these chemicals, only in combination with exposure to the sun, called photochemical reaction. Also, it can take more than 24 hours for a reaction to appear. I am disappointed with Aveeno (J&J)to advertise a product as "safe as water", when it actually consists of chemicals which are knwon to cause severe reactions in some people! Please be careful. There are plenty of people who don't have any adverse reactions, but there are plenty of people who do!

Pros: Attractive Design, Hours of Fun, Weather Resistant
Describe Yourself: First Time Parent
Best Uses: Individual Play, Physical Activity
Bottom Line: recommended
The package changed, very lovely purple color. Love it. But the product is a little oily, thick, not as good as expected. The sunblock effect is perfect, my kid is still that skin color after one day play out in the sun. Maybe I will try to use liquid next time.

Aveeno Baby Sunblock Lotion, Continuous Protection, SPF 55 rates 2 out of 5 stars, from 30 customer reviews.Irritating
by Virgo[Verified Reviewer] in San Francisco on 10/3/08
Cons: Hard to Blend, Irritating
Bottom Line: not recommended
I'm an adult, but have sensitive skin. I tried this in both the adult and baby versions, and I'm not completely convinced that they aren't the same formula inside the packages. I found the baby version to be only slightly less irritating than the adult one, and just as loaded down with matifying powder. Why does a baby sunblock even have matifying powder in it at all? It requires a ton of blending, and even then sometimes the little white "cumbs" would get into my hair. Yuck!
