Pros: Long-Lasting, Relieves Symptoms Effectively
Cons: Dries Sinuses
Best Uses: Long-Term Use, Pollen
Bottom Line: recommended
Like all second generation allergy medications, Zyrtec is not effective for everyone. Competing products, like Clariton, don't work at all for me. I'm thrilled to have Zyrtec available OTC. The only side effect my family and I have noticed is somewhat dry sinuses, but not nearly as bad as with older, first-generation antihistamines.

I used to take the prescription version of Zyrtec. This allergy season, I switched to the OTC early March and have been on it every day since. It does not work. I have the same symptoms as though I were not on any medication: sneezing, coughing, sniffling, sinus pain, watery/itchy eyes.

I wasn't sure on how to rate this because it did help my allergy symptoms, but it made my heart go into palpitations so bad that I had to take a beta blocker to stop. It was scary. Be careful if you are sensitive to medications like this. I have to stick with Alavert now.

Zyrtec works the best for me of all the allergy meds I tried. My only complaint is that it's now OTC - I much preferred when it was cheap thanks to my insurance

I agree with a lot of the people here that Zyrtec is the only allergy medication that works for me. And I have tried all kinds out there, including homeopathic remedies because I was desperate for any relief. Zyrtec for me takes about 3 days to be take effect. The first 2 days of starting the medication, I was drowsy during the day but after that, my allergy is significantly reduced and drowsiness almost disappeared. I still feel some discomfort with my nose and throat but I can live a pretty normal life while before I was literally miserable for the 4 months a year.

I can't say the label didn't warn me, but this product made me so drowsy! My whole day was wasted because I was too sleepy to accomplish anything. I fought off sleep until about 5:00, and then I was out for the night.

A few years ago I was prescribed Zyrtec by my allergist for pretty severe allergies to grass, trees, pollen, dust, dust mites, mold, mildew, (you name it)... And it is literally the only drug I've ever taken that works. Granted, it is different for everyone-- but it is definitely worth a shot if you have suffered most of your life with allergies, like I have. It was as if I had NO allergies being on this medication. It takes a few days for it to start working; I think my allergist said about 10 days. Take it every night before bed, because it may make you drowsy, and you'll be living allergy free days in no time. I am thrilled that it's OTC now; it will save me money as well as the trips to the allergist.

Zyrtec is useless. I thought Claritin provided little releif; Zyrtec provides even less. For me, the only thing it is good for is using as a sleeping pill, and that's if I want to be groggy all day. I've even tried taking it before bed, and the entire next day, I feel like I'm in a haze. Since this is a known side effect, but only affects some people, the drug might work for you. But I advised you to try it at night or when you have no need to be fully alert.

I have to disagree with the drowsy part. I take it at night and I don't think I've slept this good in YEARS! I dream a lot on it and Ive read that in other reviews. But better than the other over the counter allergy meds and well worth the price. Ive been using it for 45 days and am about to run out and need to get more ASAP!!

I have horrible seasonal hay fever and I am also allergic to cat dander. Zyrtec is the only medication other than a corticosteroid like Nasonex that works for me and I'm so glad that it's now available OTC. Zyrtec does make me drowsy so I take it at night before bedtime and I find that taking half a pill also cuts down on the drowsiness.
