Being Thai, w/ a darker tan than most Asians, I find that shopping for my complexion is somewhat challenging. Many of the darker shades in both powder and foundation tend to appear ruddy or orange y on my skin. For a point of reference, my best match in foundation is the MAC Studio Stick Foundation in NC35 (expensive, but worth every penny).
I gave L'Oreal's True Match Powder a try, as they seemed to have a wide range of shades. I actually took my MAC Studio Stick into a "brick and mortar" drugstore and compared shades in person to select the N6 as a good match. Boy was I way off. The N6 shade was not only too dark, but also made my face glow strangely orange against the pure golden yellow of my neck and chest. The funny thing is, this powder covered so well and evenly that if I had been wearing a turtle-neck, my face would've looked pretty great.
So now I know that the N=neutral was not suited for me, but I'm still not quite sure which direction to head in, W=warm or C=cool? That is where things get wild… apparently MAC labels their shades to counterbalance the wearer's undertone; most other makeup brands do the opposite. This means that my wearing NC35 means I actually have a warm undertone, which is balanced by MAC's NC35. However, after looking extensively at the shades offered in by L'Oreal, I decided to go with W5 as my next try.
