by debunker[Verified Reviewer] in HI on 10/1/09
Hopefully the reason to add panthenol was for reasons below, but it appears only effective at minimum concentrations. Otherwise in my opinion, it was added cheaply and is below the beneficial levels and used as marketing ploy. Smart yet deceptive. Panthenol is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), and is thus the provitamin of B5. In organisms it is quickly oxidized to pantothenate. Panthenol is a highly viscous transparent liquid at room temperature, but salts of pantothenic acid (for example sodium pantothenate) are powders (typically white). It is soluble in water, alcohol and propylene glycol, soluble in ether and chloroform, and slightly soluble in glycerin. Panthenol comes in two enantiomers, D and L. Only D-panthenol (dexpanthenol) is biologically active, however both forms have moisturizing properties. For cosmetic use, panthenol comes either in D form, or as a racemic mixture of D and L (DL-panthenol). Panthenol's expanded chemical formula is: HO-CH2-C(CH3)2-CH(OH)-CONH-CH2CH2CH2-OH. In cosmetics, panthenol is a humectant, emollient and moisturizer. It binds to the hair shaft readily and is a frequent component of shampoos and hair conditioners (in concentrations of 0.1-1%). It coats the hair and seals its surface[citation needed], lubricating the hair shaft and making strands appear shiny. In ointments, Panthenol has good skin penetration.[1] It is sometimes mixed with allantoin, in concentrations of up to 2-5%, and is used for treatment of sunburns, mild burns and minor skin disorders.[citation needed] It improves hydration, reduces itching and inflammation of the skin and accelerates and improves healing of epidermal wounds.[1]

by Mel[Verified Reviewer] in Washington DC on 8/30/09
Describe Yourself: First Time Parent
Best Uses: Bathing, Washing
Bottom Line: not recommended
The original formulation of this was what the allergist recommended for our family years ago. Now, in the new formulation it has an ingredient that I know we're all allergic to -- Panthenol. We will be switching to a different product.

Aquaphor Baby Gentle Wash & Shampoo rates 5 out of 5 stars, from 6 customer reviews. This is Perfect!
by Chungyen Chang[Verified Reviewer] in Berea, KY on 7/10/09
Pros: Cleans well, Comfortable, Compactable, Dries Easily, Easily Stowed, Lots of lather
Describe Yourself: Chemical allergies, Lifetime Eczema Sufferer
Best Uses: Bathing, Hair, Hygiene, Washing
Bottom Line: recommended
As a lifetime eczema sufferer, and someone who is allergic to many different chemicals, I have been searching for the right soap and shampoo which will not irritate my skin or cause it to break out in a rash. This manages to do both, and very well. It cleans very effectively. This stuff is very gentle, and it doesn't sting your eyes. I was also very impressed with how much lather you can get out of a small amount. A dime-sized amount is enough to wash half of my body. About twice that is enough to wash my thick, coarse hair twice. I love this stuff!
