My 7 year old uses this and it's effective when nothing else is. Other OTC meds did nothing. The popular prescription made him mean. With Allegra, he isn't cured but he can function again. We typically give morning and night in conjunction with Robitussin OR Delsym. (Depending on the season and type of allergy we are dealing with. Different cough syrups work differently.) Sometimes at night we also give Benedryl, which seems to make breathing easier.
My 3 1/2 year old has severe seasonal allergies and we have tried everything. Claritin and Zyrtec turn him into a very strange person - part zombine, part emotional wreck - and he still wakes up several times a night coughing and sneezing. Started Allegra this week and he is not only acting like himself, but the coughing fits have been reduced (though not eliminated). We give about 1/2 - 3/4 of the recommended dose at a time, twice daily. Sure, we can still tell he's got allergies, but this seems to be the best balance of improving the symptoms while not ruining his - and our - day.
While this does work well, it's very disappointing that they have decided to add parabens into a CHILDREN'S medicine. There is truly no reason for it. Neither liquid children's Claritin, nor Zyrtec, contain parabens, and there is more than one type in this formula.
