The strips provide a fast, convenient way of testing urine for the presence and concentration of acetoacetic acid (ketone). This substance when found in the urine provides information on carbohydrate and fat metabolism.
Acetoacetic acid can be found in the urine from diabetics and is more commonly referred to as a "ketone body." Use of Ketostix Reagent Strips can alert you and your doctor or diabetes educator to changes in your condition for which adjustments in your diet and/or medication may be needed. Indications
KETOSTIX Reagent Strips are for in vitro diagnostic use. They have been determined to be nonhazardous under the guidelines issued by OSHA in 29CFR 1910.1200(d).
As with all laboratory tests, definitive diagnostic or therapeutic decisions should not be based on any single result or method. KETOSTIX results should never be used as the sole basis for adjusting insulin dosage.
Warnings
Ketostix Reagent Strips are for in vitro diagnostic use.
Keep your fingers or other objects from touching the reagent area before testing.
Do not use product (opened or unopened) after expiration date. Use of strips beyond the expiration date may yield low results.
Store at room temperatures between 59°-86° F. Do not store the bottle in direct sunlight. Use only if tamper evident seals on this carton are intact.

One star off for being more expensive than I want them to be. Like another reviewer, I extend the value by cutting strips in half (or sometimes thirds!) to multiply the number of tests I can use. I've found this brand to be extremely reliable, and have also found that it seems to provide the same readings whether one dips the strip or just pees on it. :) I'm extremely grateful this product is carried regularly on Drugstore.com, as it is a blessing to be able to confirm that I'm staying in ketosis without having to count and track every single carbohydrate consumed. Huzzah!

I use this with my 3 year old, who is on the Ketogenic Diet for Epilepsy. She pees on it, it tells us what we need to know. Seems to be accurate. Plus, if you cut the strips in half, you get twice as many sticks. Very nice.

I'm on a ketogenic diet and as we add more foods back into my diet it's reassuring to still see moderate ketones in my urine. I do find that at the end of the day (after about 2.5 liters of water) my urine is more dilute and the ketone level is thus decreased but ANY ketones is a good sign. I've just been passing under a urine stream so it's quick, easy, and no messy cups to deal with.
