I have been using Zicam Rapidmelts with Vitamin C and Echinacea, Lemon-Lime flavor, ever since it was introduced (however long that has been - a long time, though). It has worked for me every single time. The trick is to follow instructions: you must start taking it at the first sign of a cold, and according to label directions. The eating or drinking is not an issue, since you are not supposed to eat or drink only for 15 minutes after you take it. The OJ is not an issue either, since label says not to drink citrus juices for 30 minutes before or after taking Zicam. You still have the rest of the day to drink as much OJ as you like! Not taking it on an empty stomach is not an issue either. I usually take it right after breakfast, lunch and dinner, or eat a couple of crackers when a dose is due in between meals. When you use it as directed, it works, and taking it is a snap! Just follow directions! :)

The trick with this product is to use it consistently AS SOON AS you start feeling the symptoms of a cold. If you try to take it once you're already in full blown sick mode, it won't work. As soon as I notice the tell tale scratchy throat and increased sneezing that signifies an upcoming cold, I start taking Zicam tablets every 2-3 hours. I usually finish the entire bottle in less than 2 days, and it really does shorten the cycle of my cold. I'm not sure how effective it is on the flu, but for the common cold that I get every winter, this product is fabulous.
Only drawback: the directions say not to eat or drink, but I always take this with about 4 oz of water. It's the only way to reduce the metallic taste. Orange flavor is ok. Lemon lime tastes like lipton instant tea.
For best results, use at the first sign of a cold and continue to use until symptoms completely subside.
Adults and children 12 years of age and older:
Take one tablet at the onset of symptoms
Dissolve entire tablet at the onset of symptoms
Repeat every three hours until symptoms are gone
To avoid minor stomach upset, do not take on an empty stomach
Do not eat or drink for 15 minutes after use. Do not eat or drink citrus fruits or juices for 30 minutes before or after use. Otherwise, drink plenty of fluids.
