I bought this as a night light for my niece. She is three and afraid of the dark. But it is so cool looking that I ended up buying one for myself. The light has a solid but light weight base and it comes with 3 plastic balls. The base charges the balls and they can be taken off and will still glo. Just know that even though you can change the colors of the balls on the base, when taken off they glo green. That being said, this is just a very, very cool light. If you take all the balls off and just turn on the base it provides quite a bit of light. With the balls on it is the perfect nightlight. And a child can carry the ball with them if they have to go to the bathroom. My niece takes the ball to bed with her, as it provides light and she isn't scared. The charge in the ball that provides the light fades after about twenty minutes, but is on long enough for a child to go to sleep.
A word of caution: some people I know saw the light and loved it. They then ordered cheaper alternatives and were quite disappointed. Pay the extra and stick with the Boon brand. Also, your child (or you) need to know the balls aren't toys. If tossed around, because they are kind of cheap, they will dent and would probably break. All in all a very, very cool item.

To make the balls glow: The Glo balls are removable as a portable nightlight. Turn on the nightlight base by sliding the switch on the base toward the right. When the switch stops at the first click, leave it in this position for two minutes with the balls on their pedestals. Glo balls will fade to dark after approximately 30 minutes. For light: The Glo light has a variety of light color settings. To select a color or sequence of colors: Slowly slide the switch on the base toward the right. Stop the switch at any point to set the light output to a desired color. When the switch stops at the first click, the light will be white. Move the switch past the first click to set it to a continuous cycle through the color spectrum.
