I agree. It does need to lather or foam. I usually use it underneath my normal shaving cream (Gillette or Barbasol). This works best for me. I think I really just like the anesthetic.

I ordered this because my mom and sisters are all obsessed with philosophy stuff, so I was excited to see a product for men. I really wanted to like this product, but I just don't think it is all that great. There is no lather or foam, and I find that my shave is not very smooth. It basically feels like I am shaving with something slightly more lubricating than water. I even shave in the shower and the result is no better. The smell of the product is horrid. It smells like a medicine cabinet, (think Vaporub or Bengay). I was expecting a much better fragrance from philosophy. Men want a nice-smelling product too. This smell is not even masculine, just medicine-like. And the numbing thing is just weird. I really don't want my shave to be numb so that I can't feel when I am cutting myself! I much prefer Neutrogena shave gel.

Pricey, yes. Fortunately, this product is VERY MUCH worth the price. I don't have sensitive skin but gave this a try. You only need a little bit and it does not lather much. This was strange to me. If you let it sit for a little, you will feel a tingly sensation. With use, I had absolutely no ingrown hairs. Be prepared for an EXCELLENT shave!

I have extremely sensitive skin (I had a derm take pictures of my scratch test to show rotating interns when I was a kid). I've tried Gilette, Edge, Noxzema for men, Aveeno for men, and this philosophy stuff. The philosophy Common Man is simply great. The key is to apply it wet (I shave in the shower), and wait a minute before starting to actually shave. It gives the topical anesthetic time to kick in. Worth every penny, and it actually lasts quite long.

I am a loyal philosophy products user and I use this product on my super sensitive bikini and my underarm areas. I absolutely love it! I no longer have to deal with red, irritated skin and razor burn. I get a super close shave and my skin feels moist and soft afterwards. Simply wonderful. I had no idea switching products could make such a difference, but this blows away anything from a can. My face feels moist, I shave with almost no resistance even against the grain, and comes away noticeably smoother than ever before. Aftershave has considerably less sting now too. Five stars arent enough, but will have to do.

This is very thick, so you will want to rub it between wet fingers before applying it to your face if you don't use a shaving brush. Beyond that, it's no more exciting or easier on my sensitive skin than other good shaving creams. I'd say pass this one up because of the price; there's plenty of other shaving creams here that work great.
