I recently switched to a Mavea pitcher and filter system after my Brita pitcher (which I had for several years) was no longer doing the job.
I don't know what happened to my Brita filters, but no matter what I did the water would pour straight through them, no drip, and taste exactly like the tap water. I know there was little to no filtering going on, so what was the point? I followed the directions and it was always the same. I even wrote to Brita; they gave me a replacement box of filters, but it was the same problem, water poured straight through.
Anyway, Mavea filters do pour the water through instead of a drip, but it's a small stream that greatly slows down the water's trip through the filter giving it more processing time. So far I am happy with Mavea's water taste and quality. I use it for cooking and drinking.
Placing and removing Mavea filters is different from Brita, there's no notch to line up. You just press the filter in until it's snug. I don't know why the directions say there's a 'click'. It never clicks into place. It just fits snug and that's it.
There'll be a gap under the filter and that's okay. There's no need to press really hard, you're not trying to jam it in there, and you remove it with the o-ring on top. I haven't had any trouble with the water flowing down around the sides of the filter and pouring out the bottom because the Mavea pitcher's design slows the water's flow. In a Brita the only thing controlling water flow was the filter, and if the filter wasn't working, you got more expensive tap water.
The sensor on my Elemaris pitcher isn't just a 'timer' count down. My city's water is very hard (407 ppm / 23.8 grains on average), so while I'm not getting a full two months from each filter, a filter does last well over a month. Changing it is much simpler than with the Brita as well. Just swish the filter in water and then place it in the pitcher. But, like a Brita or any water pitcher, a filter change is a good reminder to run your pitcher through the dishwasher (without the sensor) to remove hard water build up. (I ran it through on the Light wash / China setting, pitcher on the bottom shelf, everything else on the top shelf with some Lemishine & Cascade to remove hard water deposits, and it was fine.)
The bottom of the pitcher does sometimes get some very fine 'powder' from the charcoal filter, but it usually never makes it into the cups unless you're pouring out the pitcher completely. I've honestly only seen it make it into a glass twice. You can just empty the pitcher when it gets low and water your plants with it once in a while to avoid this. It's a rare occurrence and really not a big deal.
I don't know what the other reviewer meant when they said they had sand in their glass unless they did not follow the directions to shake their filter in water and completely empty out the first two pitchers of water after a filter change. It's not as bad as the black flakes that would float out of the Brita filters.
I am currently using a replacement filter bought from drugstore.com, and I have not had a problem with debris in the water. It works as well as the one that came with the pitcher.

Our town water tastes bad. The mavea pitcher and filter takes the bad taste out. The better tasting (and smelling) water makes better coffee, tea, etc. We're glad we started using it. The pitcher plus filter packages is a bit pricey, but worth it in the long run.
