by Been There Tried That...[Verified Reviewer] in Germantown, MD on 10/28/09
Pros: Moisturizes Well
Cons: Bad Smell
Describe Yourself: Brand Buyer
Best Uses: Bedtime, Dry/Chapped Skin, Eczema, Psoriasis and Dermatitis, Winter Dryness
Bottom Line: recommended
My husband developed extremely dry scalp after he began swimming at the gym. We have never gotten it diagnosed but it looked really bad. His scalp would basically flake and shed all day long to where he had piles all over his shoulders and clothes. We've tried all kinds of products; Sulfer8, DermaE, Dermarest, Scalpacin, Head&Shoulders, TeaTree, and all kinds of other "natural" products. This is the only one that has worked. The first week he tried it, we saw results. His scalp got better and he had less flaking. But because he still swims he's going to have to keep using the product. The only advice that I have is to do what works best for you. The directions say to use the product at night w/a cap on but my hubs doesn't like anything on his head or body while he's sleeping (he takes it off in his sleep), he wears it in the place of hair gel in his hair during the day. The product does have a STRONG odor and it does have a texture. But once my hubs got used to the smell (he insists he doesn't even smell it anymore) he wears it in his hair during the day and it doesn't bother me at all by the time he comes home from work. I would recommend this product for people w/dry, flaky skin. NOT dandruff! More skin related such as psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema...

I use it mostly for psoriasis on my knees, elbows and legs and noticed immediate improvement. It does have that "tar" smell going on but that evaporates quickly. In my case I don't think it will replace UVB treatments, but it does go on well and makes a good complement to my regular routine. I find its best use is just for moisturizing lesions and making them less noticeable.

I have been using Elta Tar since I was diagnosed last year with allergic atopic dermatitis which left areas of ezcema. I like the feel of this product and the way it melts in my hands when applied. The coal tar smell doesn't bother me in the least and, call me weird, but I actually like the smell, nor is my husband bothered by it much either. I use it at night before bed and it helps relieve the itching and keeps me from scratching in my sleep. After two bad strep skin infections this is huge. I don't notice it staining any clothing or bedding. I am ordering my second jar after nine months for it lasts a long time.

I have had psorasis for years. I used this for my ears and a dry skin rash on my stomach. I feel that it is very effective in controlling the flaking and itching. I have been able to almost eliminate the use of medication on my ears. The smell and color is a little gross, but it goes on clear and the odor goes away quickly. I used it on a large area of my stomach and thought my husband would smell it as we cuddled up on the couch, but he said he couldn't smell it even though I thought I could.

Cons: Doesn't Absorb Well, Too Greasy or Heavy
Bottom Line: not recommended
This product was not for me. After reading all the positive reviews I thought it seemed worth a try. I have used steroid creams in the past with good results but was looking for something I could get over the counter to treat my eczema. I have somewhat sensitive skin and this product really irritated it. I used it on my elbows and on a patch on my leg, after a few applications the rash became enflamed and the itching increased. Maybe if I would have been able to hold out longer I would have seen results but it did not seem worth it. If you have sensitive skin I would think twice about this product. I¿m back to using Dermarest with much better results so far. Also I should add that this product was very greasy and stained my clothing. It takes a LONG time to absorbe.

Pros: Absorbs Quickly, Goes On Smoothly, Moisturizes Well, Softens Skin
Describe Yourself: Budget Buyer
Best Uses: After Shower/Bath, Bedtime, Psoriasis
Bottom Line: recommended
I bought this product for psoriasis, based on positive reviews online. I like that the scent after application is nice, and that it feels as if I'm using a nice body cream instead of a medicinal product on my skin--and that the container looks like something I can leave in my bathroom with my other products without feeling embarrassed to have it out on the counter. And even though I sometimes forget, it seems to be working, which is more than I can say about the budget-priced stuff.

Pros: Does not stain clothes, Moisturizes Well, Not Greasy
Best Uses: After shower in morning, Bedtime
Bottom Line: recommended
I have used this product for moderate psoriasis for 3 weeks with fair to good results. Some areas cleared nicely, others are diminished but not entirely gone. It has a mild odor when first applied that I do not find offensive, just different, but the odor goes away after a couple of minutes. I plan to continue using this with hopes all will go away eventually. My one concern is the instruction on the product that it is not for prolonged use without consulting a physician. Right now I prefer this product over the side effects of steroid creams.

Pros: Absorbs Quickly, Goes On Smoothly, Long Lasting, Low odor, Moisturizes Well, Not Greasy
Describe Yourself: Brand Buyer
Best Uses: Psoriasis
Bottom Line: recommended
I've had psoriasis for over twenty years and have been through every treatment including UV therapy, steroids, methotrexate, dovonex, and Humira. This product worked to clear my worst patches that wouldn't get better with anything else. I have tried other tar preparations in the past but they had a terrible odor, were sticky, and stained the skin. EltaTar is smooth, absorbs fast, doesn't stain, and while it does have a tar smell going on, it quickly fades and after a few minutes, is unnoticeable. Since I started using this, I've been able to cut my methotrexate dose in half and still achieve almost total clearing. I was at 40% coverage and now I am down to less than 5%. This is the first time my elbows have been clear in years. Highly recommended.
