I have sleep apnea, and I use Afrin to keep my airway open while I sleep, in conjunction with CPAP therapy. Therefore, I take it before bedtime; its effects last all night and then some.
When I began using Afrin, I had trouble getting it to squirt out of the bottle. It congealed too easily. So I began diluting the Afrin 50-50 with distilled water.
Dilution has had several benefits. It makes the substance easy to squirt into my nose, and reduces the amount I need to use.
Furthermore, I think diluting the Afrin helps prevent the "Afrin rebound" effect: if you use it too much, it is said to stop working and even to make symptoms worse. So I dilute it, and use it only once per 24 hours. For me, it's effective for about 20 hours rather than 12.
I give it three squirts into the left nostril, which is my "problem side," and two squirts into the right nostril: equivalent to one-and-a-half and one squirt of the undiluted product, respectively.
Incidentally, I do NOT recommend that you dilute the Afrin. To do so you must use absolutely pristine water -- I use distilled -- and be very careful not to contaminate the bottle or the product within. But I have gotten away with this procedure for years; diluting the gunky, gelatinous Afrin makes a good-but-not-easily-usable product into an excellent product.
And of course, by diluting it I reduce the per-use cost.

The problem is, it's extremely habit forming. I've been using it for 7 or 8 years, so believe me when I say, DON'T USE IT FOR MORE THAN A FEW DAYS. I go through a whole bottle of the stuff in about a week.
After prolonged use, without it your sinuses will swell up so tightly that you will swear your eyes will pop out of your head. Trust me when i say that it is a VERY UNPLEASANT feeling!
I've quit smoking, something I never thought I could ever do, but that was NOTHING compared to quitting this stuff.
So, like I said; the stuff works great, but be extremely careful about how long you use it!

It does not work, I prefer and is more economic "Afrin Severe Congestion in a Spray". Is absurd that the Afrin Non Drop costs as much money and it finishes in a day. Does not work. Way don't sale the regular Spray anymore?

The sprayers are horrible! When you test it in open air, it works but as soon as you put it near your nostril, it doesn't. The very few times it did spray, it certainly didn't unclog my nose. Nothing beats Vicks Sinex!

This product is a GODSEND when you are suffering from severe sinus congestion from a bad cold or allergies. It works almost immediately and you get relief! It says to use every 12 hours, but it doesn't last that long, usually 6 or 8 hours before you need a new dose. I've used it every 6 to 8 hours with a severe cold and did not find that I was addicted to it and was easily able to stop using this when my congestion finally subsided for good.

Excellent produce for severe congestion. Not for long-term use unless absolutely necessary. Doesn't last for 12 hours, as advertised, but does reliably provide relief for 6 to 8 hours. Far better than generic substitutes and worth extra price.

adults and children 6 to under 12 years of age (with adult supervision):2 or 3 sprays in each nostril not more often than every 10 to 12 hours. Do not exceed 2 doses in any 24-hours period.

Shake well before use. Before using the first time, remove the protective cap from the tip and prime metered pump by depressing pump firmly several times. To spray, hold bottle with thumb at base and nozzle between first and second fingers. Without tilting head, insert nozzle into nostril. Fully depress rim with a firm, even stroke and sniff deeply. Wipe nozzle clean after use.
Retain carton for future reference on full labeling. Store between 15° and 25°C (59° and 77°F).
