Pros: Cleans Thoroughly, Gentle, Lathers Well
Cons: Smells Bad
Describe Yourself: Product Junkie
Best Uses: Dandruff
Hair Type: Straight Hair
Bottom Line: recommended
I've got a sensitive scalp (and sensitive skin in general) and have been battling dandruff as a result of coloring and regularly heat-styling my hair. I am also prone to eczema on my legs and face. Anti-dandruff/scalp-rescuing products that are safe for color-treated hair are difficult to find. I bought this product because it said it could help my dandruff, was safe for color-treated hair, AND could also be used as a body wash during psoriasis or eczema flare-ups. To my surprise all these claims have been proven true in my experience. I was very glad to notice a dramatic reduction in scalp flakes after my very first use. Also during that first use I used a small amount on some patches of eczema on my face and noticed the skin in those areas isn't as flaky or inflamed as a result. The smell isn't great - it's like bengay-masked-with-tea-tree. It rinsed totally clean though, and I didn't notice a lingering scent (especially once I used my conditioner). Thumbs up on this one.

Best Uses: Any hair, Fine hair, Frizzy hair
Hair Type: Wavy Hair
Bottom Line: recommended
Some may say it has a bad smell, but I would disagree. It has a medicinal smell, but more pleasant than most store brands. I think like the smell. AND, it takes care of my itch and flakes. I do not need to use it everyday, but when I use it, it's typically for a few days then I'm good to go for a while. Shake before use. Work the lather. Leave on a bit before rinsing. It has a shelf life of a year, so check the expiration date if buying in a store -- if it's on clearance it's probably expired. I also used it when I broke out in hives from an allergic reaction -- helped relieve the itch.

I use it a couple times a week. The smell is pungent, but it can be masked with styling products.

A little pricy for my taste but did the trick for my man's flaky hair. The drugstore brands did not.

I almost didn't get this after reading the reviews about the odor, but I think it smells fine. A little mediciny, but nothing unexpected. My three year old even said she likes how it smells!

I have used this product for over a year now, and will continue to use it. Other medicated products dry out my scalp and hair, and greatly worsen my scalp problem. Like another reviewer, I sometimes alternate this Phillip B. with the Neutrogena TSal, mainly because I've read that these medicated shampoos may lose their effectiveness if always used. The T Sal is also very gentle to my scalp. I think the Phillip B. is more effective for my flare ups. My first bottle of the Phillip B. lasted over one year--it doesn't take much product per hair wash (I also don't need to feel a big lather on my hair to feel the product is working). I have also used the Phillip B. on other areas of my body with flare-ups, and it does help.

Pros: Cleans Thoroughly, Effective, Improves Hair Health, Works on oily flakey hair
Cons: Doesn't Lather Well, Expensive
Describe Yourself: Product Junkie
Best Uses: Oily Hair
Hair Type: Straight Hair
Bottom Line: recommended
Have oily flakey scalp which is prone to clogged pores and break outs. On top of that, I live in an area that has very hard water so this exacerbates my scalp condition. I've used countless other shampoos that claim to help with these scalp issues, but my scalp would continue being itchy with oily clumpy flakes. I've used Head & Shoulders, Dermarest, Psoriasin, Sebulex etc. Within one week of using this, I could feel and see a difference. I was no longer manically itching and no oily flakes.

by Aaron[Verified Reviewer] in Italy on 4/17/09
Pros: Lathers Well
Cons: Ineffective, Smells Bad
Describe Yourself: Beauty Conscious
Hair Type: Straight Hair
Bottom Line: not recommended
I've had oily dandruff for years, and have tried many products. Considering the product's high price I am disappointed. While the product does seem to do a good job of cleaning the hair, it seems ineffective on oily dandruff flakes. To boot - it has a distictly unpleasant smell. It may be good on dry dandruff, but if your problem is oily dandruff, search elsewhere.

by San Diego Girl[Verified Reviewer] in San Diego, CA on 3/10/09
Pros: Gentle, Great Smell, Improves Hair Health, Lathers Well
Bottom Line: recommended
This is the only product that helps my dry scalp/dandruff. For some reason, none of the other products on the market does anything but irritate my scalp more. This product cleared up my dry scalp within the first few washes. It is EXPENSIVE but SOOOOOOOOOOO worth it...especially if nothing else has worked. I am not sure if it is the homeopathic ingredients or if it treats both dandruff/psoriasis. Whatever it is, it works so well and smells great.
