I first had used Calgon for bath. When you try it, you will see that the stuff that usually makes a bathtub ring doesn't. It predominately stays in and goes down with the water. As I empty the tub, I wipe the sides of the tub. Voila!! Reduces scrubbing. When I found the Calgon for clothes, I deduced that if the grunge stays in the bath water, if I were to use this in my washer, my clothes would come out cleaner. I was right. I have used this for over 20 years and won't wash without it. With all this in mind, there is no need to buy extra products to "clean" your washer. Just like the bathtub, the grunge goes out with the water.
I was very surprised when I arrived in the US and nobody ever heard of Calgon. The water we use in the desert is extremely hard and it damages everything. Back in the UK I would never wash a load without Calgon, it makes a HUGE difference in the results, and it protects the washer as well as making the clothes softer and cleaner.
If you never used it before, run a cycle with 2 cups of the product, without any clothes in the machine. This will clean all the system and you can safely add your clothes for the next cycle.
Does anyone know if it is available in tablets and powder too? I've never seen Calgon in any supermarket in the US, and even online, this is a hard to find product.
I moved to an area with ridiculously hard water, and it's impossible to find this in any store. Glad I was able to find it at drugstore.com, at least now I can get my laundry clean.

The product itself seems to work as advertized.I don't have to wash my husbands shirts as many times(to remove stains).The only complaint is the product is described as being 32 oz.,when it is only 16oz.
We have very hard water in our area. The minerals of the hard water deposit in our clothes and towels over time which change the feel of the material and creates smells. This product is great at preventing this and helps to work out deposits already formed.
l like this product because it's a water softner, NOT a fabric softner. I feel this allows for longer lasting wear of your clothes.

If you mix one cup of Calgon with a sink link with tin foil and hot, hot water, it makes a perfect dip for cleaning your silver. even the oldest pieces.
I have extremely hard water in my area, so I thought I'd give Calgon Water Softener a try. It says on the package that my white clothes would look whiter and my color clothes would look brighter and this is what I found after I did several loads of wash the first time I used it. All of my clothes look great and even seem cleaner than they usually do. It costs me extra to add this to the wash although I only add one capful per load, but it is worth the extra I spend to get my clothes cleaner than I've ever seen them before.
For Laundry Use: Add 1 capful (1/4 cup) of Calgon Water Softener along with your laundry detergent. More Calgon Water Softener can be safely used in very hard water, large loads, or extremely dirty laundry. Bleach and other detergent boosters are not necessary when you use Calgon Water Softener.
