A little background first: - I'm 41 - my hair is long, wavy, fine/medium texture, slightly oily scalp - I live in the desert in New Mexico, but my hair started thinning some 10 years ago while living in rainy London, UK. It works! As far as thinning hair is concerned, all I want is to keep my strands on top of my head, not on the floor, the pillow, around the bathtub. I've been to several doctors and the cause for my thinning hair is hormonal imbalance. Oral contraceptives were the only medication that helped, but now, trying to get pregnant, I had to stop with contraceptives and hair was falling all over the house again. I bought this shampoo but really skeptical of its effectiveness. And lots of reviews complained about the smell. What I found out is: - it has a fresh, herbal scent. I like it. It's a matter of taste only. - as it's a treatment shampoo, I prefer to leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing out. I shampoo twice: first and very quickly using a deep cleanse Neutrogena shampoo. Then I apply Avalon, wrap my hair in a bun, and go about my shower routine, soap, shaving, whatever. I only rinse it out after at least 5 minutes. It gives a nice tingling sensation while it's on. Then I rinse it really well, apply a deep conditioner only to the length of my hair, and rinse it abundantly, with tepid/cold water. Whoever has thinning hair should NEVER wash it with hot water. It works for me. Hair feels fuller, shinier and manageable. Use a gentle wooden comb, specially while it still damp. The difference is clearly noticeable.

I have thin/thinning hair and I read the reviews and decided to try this shampoo after my hair stylist recommended that I find a shampoo/conditioner with biotin that might make my hair more full. I wanted a shampoo without SLS, so I tried this one. It was very hard to get my hair clean and my scalp was left feeling oily and itchy. After trying to be very patient and going through a whole bottle of the shampoo/conditioner and then trying again with the next set I had to give up. I was getting scalp acne (even though I carefully wash my scalp) because it wasn't cleaning my hair and scalp enough and my head itched so badly I had to start using tea tree oil shampoo just to be able to sleep on my pillow without feeling itchy prickles all over. I think I developed an allergy to one or more of the ingredients or maybe it's just because it couldn't clean my hair. I switched back to Kiss My Face, and my hair is clean and scalp are clean again albeit a little dry (will I ever find the perfect shampoo?). Also, there was no improvement in hair loss or regrowth or fullness after months of being doggedly loyal to Avalon Organics' "thickening" shampoo/conditioner. Of course, Kiss My Face doesn't regrow hair either, at least it doesn't leave me with an itchy, oily scalp.
P.S. It smells kinda like medicine, and when you first get in the shower (after previously using this shampoo/conditioner) and start rinsing your dry hair, it smells like wet dog.
The product smells horrible, it smells like a blend of mint and garbage! The moment i opened the bottle I had to put it at arms length to get it away from my nose. The thickening effect is zero, it makes hair feel gunky, and that filled-with-product feeling. Hair strands are all stuck together and doesn't wash out well.
This shampoo is advertised for thickening and improving body, and it did neither. My fine hair seemed even more limp after using Avalon Organics as well as appearing dull and unable to hold any curl. It also smells terrible. The only positive was lathering well. It may work for other hair types, but I do not recommend this product for fine hair. I have had no success with "organic" products; they just cost more and don't deliver what they promise.
I use this every day. It prepares my naturally thin and curly (frizzy hair) to receive conditioners. Alone with my hair it does not work, but with a good conditioner like RenPure Argan my hair is silky soft and managable. I still have to use a leave in conditioner to manage the curls.
I don't understand why it got such rave reviews, which was why I bought it to add volume to my thinning hair. I have used it for about 5-6 weeks, and I can say that it did more harm to my scalp and hair than any other shampoo I had ever used. It does add volume, but only for 12 hrs. or so, and then your hair would go limp and flat, not to mention the greasy scalp it fails to clean. Now I am using a medicated shampoo for my itchy scalp...I mean a shampoo should be able to clean your scalp, right? And it caused more hair loss because it leaves my hair super dry, like straw. I would not even recommend it to my enemy.
Well I bought this because it was recommended and got good reviews here. But turned out it's just not for me. It leaves the hair really dry and coarse, and does not give much foam. Won't buy again.
I have been using it everyday and my hair is very shiny. It is a very clear shampoo so that means there is nothing in it to cause build up of product on hair. After using shampoo for several days my hair is not shampoo weary. I highly recommend it.
I have thin hair and had used many products before I tried this Avalon Organics product. That was three years ago and have used only this shampoo since because it is perfect!
