by Josie[Verified Reviewer] in IL on 10/14/09
Pros: Easy To Use, Effective, Safe, Stays Dry
Primary use: Personal
Bottom Line: recommended
I purchased this product because I wanted an ice pack like the kind that was used in the hospital - flexible, no sweating, and easy to use. Just like the hospital version, it is not intended to be a long-time durable product, but that is okay - it lasts for quite a number of uses and the price is right. The elastic with velcro straps make it easy to position.

I had foot surgery and needed ice bags that would not get my plaster cast wet, and then that would not get the fabric splint wet. These ice bags really do stay dry. I used mine constantly 24/7 for over a week before I needed to replace it.

Cons: Ineffective, Messy, Poor Quality

I followed Directions and did not over fill it with ice at all, but the very first use it began leaking, maybe an ice cube somehow created a tiny hole in the weak/poor quality material? Waste of money. :(

An ice pack similar to this one was given to me in the hospital after my lumpectomy. I loved it for the shape, which allowed the ice to cover both of my incisions comfortably, and the fact that it stayed dry on the exterior. After that one wore out, I went to a local drugstore to find a similar one, and came away with a traditional ice pack. I hated it. Luckily drugstore.com carries this kind -- I bought two, knowing that they have a relatively short life -- and have ended up storing one for a "rainy day," because I haven't had a leak yet. Traditional ice bags use far more ice and water condenses on the outside in a very uncomfortable way. Gel packs don't get cold enough and take too long to rechill. I was able to sleep with this icepack on me or next to me if I slept on my side, and when all the ice would melt I could just toss it onto the bedside table and not worry that the water would seep out. I don't use the straps but that's in large part because I'm using this across my chest. Really, this is the one thing that eased my pain the most after surgery, other than acetaminophen with codeine, and that's not a viable long term option. :-)

The bags leaked from day one. The velcro straps broke on day two. I threw them in the garbage on day three and purchased neoprene sleeves with reusable gel packs.

I recently had rotator cuff surgery and was given one of these at the hospital. This has got to be the best invention ever. You do not have to worry about putting it in something because it doesn't get wet. The only disadvantage over the one I got in the hospital is the velco straps but you can always use an Ace bandage to hold it in place. I have recommended these to several people I know.

We like these ice packs because they are comfortable (not too cold, and not all wet), and are easy to apply and attach to areas that hurt. Also, they are light and easy to pack in our First Aid Kit.

by W Sanders[Verified Reviewer] in Undisclosed on 7/5/07
After recent knee surgery, I was given Model 33500, the kind with tie-on straps rather than the elastic. The first ice bag I've ever used that did not leak. Not terribly durable, but good for 20 to 50 uses. Holds a lot (almost a liter) of ice. You can supplement the holding power of the straps with an ace-type bandage.
